It was challenging but I've discovered and learnt so many great things. Goryōkaku is a fortress in Hakodate, which was designed by Takeda Ayasaburō and completed in 1866, two years before the collapse of the Tokugawa shogunate. It is shaped like a five-pointed star. This allowed for greater numbers of gun emplacements on its walls than a traditional Japanese fortress, and reduced the number of blind spots where a cannon could not fire. It became the capital of the Republic of Ezo, a state that existed only in 1869. It was the site of the last battle of the Boshin War between the Republic and the Empire of Japan. The fighting lasted for a week (June 20–27, 1869). Today, Goryōkaku is a park declared as a Special Historical Site, being a part of the Hakodate city museum and a citizens’ favorite spot for cherry-blossom viewing in spring. I was happy to see again a family who emigrated from Ukraine (four people on the left in photo 2), whom I met and helped a bit in April 2022, and a friend from Afghanistan (left in photo 3), whom I met in 2018. Their strength, bravery and composure are simply incredible. I was deeply moved by the fact that my friendship with them continues, and that they now speak German and live positively despite the brutal and tragic situation in their home countries. Everybody was impressed by his professionalism and passion for music, because he never showed any fatigue during rehearsals, before and after the performance. When I played Rondo Capriccioso by Mendelssohn as encore after playing Grieg in 2021, he came back on the stage to listen to my playing, as it was his piece of memories. I have learned so much from working with him and I am fondly grateful for all his contribution to the world.
