Quac was also actively involved in the unification and democratization movements of his homeland. During his study, Hosoe joined the Demokrato Artists Association, an avant-garde group led by artists such as Ei-Q. He played a leading role in shaping the postwar Japanese photography scene, developing it in his own unique direction by linking it with avant-garde movements that sought new intersections with art, literature, performance and film. His major works include ‘Man and Woman’ and ‘Ordeal by Roses,’ a celebrated collaboration with writer Yukio Mishima. Hosoe first encountered Antoni Gaudí’s architecture during a visit to Barcelona, Spain, in 1964. From 1977 onward, he made repeated visits to iconic Gaudí sites such as the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, resulting in the photographic series Gaudí’s Universe. This work, Casa Mila 7, was taken in 1977 as part of that series. Casa Milà was constructed by Gaudí between 1906 and 1910 as a residence for industrialist Pere Milà and his wife, Roser Segimon. The building is renowned for its complete absence of straight lines; its undulating curves evoke natural forms such as sand dunes or lava waves. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Tama Art University. It was during this period that he began engaging seriously with model-making. His graduation project, ‘Imaginary Embodiment through Plastic Models (2013)’, a hybrid diorama integrating plastic models and technology, received critical acclaim. Since then, he has exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, and has collaborated with brands such as Balenciaga and Lamborghini, establishing himself as one of the most prominent young artists of his generation. This work, ‘#1912’, is a mixed media piece created in 2020. One of the defining characteristics of Ikeuchi’s practice is functionality. In recent years, he has focused on customising everyday devices, such as VR headsets and headphones, by adding elaborate structural elements through his model-building approach. These modified gadgets, originally designed to support our daily lives in the digital era, are transformed through Ikeuchi’s sampling method into objects imbued with a nostalgic vision of futurism. While he focuses on painting, he works across a variety of media, including sculpture, photography, neon, and video. Ligon’s artistic practice began to express themes such as race, sexuality, and identity. This work, Prologue Series #20 was created in 1993 as part of the Prologue series that Ligon worked on in the early 1990s. The work features an excerpt from the 1952 novel Invisible Man by American author Ralph Ellison. “I am invisible. No, I am not some eerie man who haunts Edgar Allan Poe, nor some Hollywood ectoplasm. I am a flesh, bone, fiber, and liquid, and one might even say I have a mind. I am invisible, it is only because people do not see me...” Ligon repeatedly hand-painted this passage using a stencil on black-painted paper. The vague text, faintly shadowed on the all-black screen, evokes an abstract and ambiguous sense of the subject, while also alluding to his identity as an African-American and his social position. He first came into the spotlight in 1981 with his ‘Akasakamitsuke’ series, early works featuring polyethylene-colored forms, which shown in his debut solo exhibition ‘Tatemono no Kimochi’ at Muramatsu Gallery. Around 2005, he began working on his ongoing series ‘Zero Thumbnail’, in which size-0 canvases are paired with suggestive and often whimsical titles that hint at narrative. This series, which comprises one of the largest bodies of paintings in Okazaki’s career, is characterized by the playful movement of multicolored paint, often appearing as if applied with a palette knife, dancing freely across the canvas. While still a student at Musashino Art University, Tanaami began his career as a graphic designer, working in editorial design for cultural magazines. Since then, he has continued to work as a multi-talented artist, crossing a wide range of media from painting, printmaking, collage, and video art to three-dimensional works. Tanaami’s creative drive was deeply rooted in his personal memories, particularly those from his childhood. His work often explores recollections of food, war, play, and his relationship with his mother - fragments of memory accumulated in his mind over nearly 80 years. These memories are expressed through a densely layered collage style. From the 2000s onward, his work evolved into a more intricate visual language, as exemplified by his series Infinite Universe. The work Infinite Universe, created in 2017, is a large-scale, four-panel piece that encapsulates many of Tanaami’s signature motifs: soaring fighter planes, iconic chickens, and swirling cherry blossoms. YAMAGUCHI Katsuhiro (1928–2018) is widely known as a founding member of Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop), an interdisciplinary art collective established in the early 1950s. Over the course of his six-decade career, he produced a wide range of media art spanning painting, sculpture, video works, and video installations. One of the key works that brought Yamaguchi into the spotlight was Vitrine, created in 1952. This box-shaped piece consists of three layers: patterned glass (mol glass), an image drawn on glass, and another image on paper. The use of polarized glass allows the imagery to shift depending on the viewer’s angle, creating a dynamic visual experience through the refraction of light. In this work, Light Sculpture ‘Vitrine’, created in the 1990s, Yamaguchi added a new element - light - by incorporating fluorescent lamps inside the work. In his later years, Yamaguchi delved further into interactive art, encouraging a reciprocal relationship between artwork and audience.
