This T-shirt carries a message of encouragement for women to live life true to themselves, even in the face of social pressures. It’s a phrase I’ve often repeated to myself whenever I needed courage. Not just for women—everyone has moments when they lose touch with their own voice or feel like they have to suppress who they really are. I hope this T-shirt can be a reminder to choose yourself in those moments. Each piece is handmade by me—I bleach and tie-dye every T-shirt by hand, then print the design using silk screen printing. I’ve been based in Germany for quite some time now—before I knew it, 20 years have passed. When I first moved to Berlin in 2005, the city still carried traces of poverty, and empty lots were scattered everywhere. Having been used to the convenience and fast-moving trends of life in Tokyo, it felt like I had stepped into a completely different world. In Berlin, being overly fashionable or obsessed with trends was seen as uncool. My friends decorated their homes with furniture they’d found on the street, customizing and creating things themselves. To someone like me, who once believed that “the polished life in Tokyo was the ultimate,” this way of living felt refreshingly free and incredibly inspiring. Berlin taught me the joy of customizing life with my own hands. Even the most ordinary day-to-day life can be colored and transformed, just like painting a picture, with a little creativity and a playful spirit. One is a male with black fur and white “socks” on his paws. The other is a female ginger tabby. I’ve heard that female ginger tabbies are quite rare. They’re siblings, but they don’t get along at all. Breaking up their fights has become part of my daily routine. I’ve loved animals since I was little, and I often dream of living in a house with a big garden where I can be surrounded by all sorts of animals. Realistically, though, I tend to be a bit lazy, so having just two cats is probably just the right balance for me. In my new animal-themed series, I’m painting animals that I personally love. I plan to debut this work at the ceramics market in Dießen next week. @diessener_toepfermarkt I hope everyone can find an animal they love in the collection. January was spent quietly working in the cold, dark Berlin winter—steadily making pieces, planning, and preparing for the first half of 2025. Then February arrived. My son caught the flu at school, and naturally, I caught it from him. Between taking care of him and being unwell myself, the month was mostly spent either tending to the sick or resting in bed—not much work got done. March has been all about catching up. With BVG striking twice a week, getting to the studio wasn’t always possible, so I eventually carried 30kg of clay home and worked late into the night. April will be another busy month. I need to finish my planned projects, but my husband is heading to the Brazilian jungle for work next week, and the Easter holidays are right around the corner. Then in May, I’ll have an exhibition in Munich, followed by a ceramics market in Diessen. From June, exhibitions will take me to Tokyo, Nagoya, Kobe, Fukuoka, and Kyoto. Looking at my schedule now, I have to wonder—what was I thinking when I planned all this? It’s been quite a ride, but I’m managing. This artwork will be featured on coffee bean packaging, stickers, and wrapping paper. I painted it with Miku, the warm and charming owner, in mind. If you ever find yourself in Kobe, I highly recommend stopping by Petal! It’s the perfect place to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and a cozy atmosphere. Their coffee and goods also make wonderful gifts and souvenirs. Art isn’t just something to hang on the wall—it can be part of everyday life in so many ways. I’ve always dreamed of creating wine and craft beer labels with my abstract paintings, so I was truly honored and excited to take on this project! It brings me so much joy to see my artwork become part of beautiful packaging that people can enjoy. I’d love to continue exploring this kind of work and sharing my art in different ways. This year I was able to return to Japan twice by myself, fulfilling my ideal frequency of returning to Japan! I am grateful to my family for sending me back home, my family and friends in Japan who are waiting for me, and the people who are waiting for my works. Every time I return to Japan, I have many wonderful encounters, and my desire to create even more fun and exciting things for everyone grows as I have been away from my home country for a long time.
