Oscar Wilde’s “A cynic knows the price of everything and the value of nothing” and Audre Lorde’s “If I do not define myself for myself, I will be crunched into other people’s fantasies and eaten alive” read that value is the trace of a subjective aesthetics that resists imposed fantasy. This exhibition reboots fading subjectivity and replays the distorted narratives of peripheral voices. Benedict labeled Japan a “culture of shame,” flattening it to an objective gaze, but Orientalism made that gaze a violence of othering and Postcolonialism revealed the invisibility of internal structures. Eastern thought was marginalized and Japanese thought cast even farther out. Japanese practice resists: Rikyu’s pursuit of tea; Showa‑era anime refined under persecution; craftsmanship; self‑regulated communal ethics during disaster. This is the eye of our subjective eight million gods that chooses aesthetic sufficiency over expansion, a syncretic ethical apparatus of Shinto “tatari” and Buddhist “inga‑ōhō.” Contradictory apps run at once—Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Hollywood. Shinto is not a religion app but a “cultural OS”—Japanese Syncretism. But it is not eternal. The capitalistic expansionist OS overwrites it as “obsolete.” At that seam, BLACK2WHITE∈NEWTYPE renders generosity and violence legible in Western languages aligning with syncretic resistances in the African diaspora and Indigenous Latin America. By juxtaposing Rikyu’s chanoyu with manga/anime, it tracks the turn from subjective to objective aesthetics as “Information Transmission and its (Ingrained) Distortion.” In an age where hyper‑capitalism and technology splinter culture, we ask “If all relations become monetizable, where, and how can we recreate them?” Experimental hypothesis, an environment that admits contradiction. The exhibition is not work. It is a tool for ichiza‑konryu: Without language, through ritual protocols, host and guests co‑create the work. Systems appear as hospitality, and hospitality returns as another system. The subjective aesthetics of global minorities cyclically reboot against systems. This is always a terminal log, and a sustained, syncretic resistance.

“Hidari‑Mitsudomoe/左三つ巴” As YAMAN NKYMN’s crest/artist mark, we re‑design the traditional Japanese symbol “Hidari‑Mitsudomoe” using the structure of a golden spiral. This shows that the aesthetic sensibility found in Sen no Rikyu’s tea practice and the proportional beauty of Western mathematics intersect as an incidental visual analogy. Rikyu’s aesthetics have also been studied from the perspectives of the Fibonacci sequence and fractals; his signature tea room, Tai‑an, has been rendered visible—through a reported value of fractal dimension D = 1.60 in a specific study—as embodying wabi‑sabi via a balance of order and disorder. “Hidari‑Mitsudomoe” symbolizes water and circulation. Its origin, the magatama, has existed since the Jomon period (prehistory) and appears in Japan’s creation myths. Around the 12th century it was codified as “Hidari‑Mitsudomoe”. Used in shrines and family crests, it resonates with the “Oni” and “Sugawara no Michizane” references in YAMAN’s work. The arrangement of three magatamas evokes oneness that transcends dualism.

My first art exhibition in New York, YAMAN NKYMN ∩ SABIÉ “(跡見:)黒節分/(Atomi:)WHITE2BLACK∈division” is completed. ㅤ In contrast to my former presentation as part of the official program of Frieze Week Los Angeles 2022, I planned this exhibition with one intention in my mind. ㅤ I wanted to present Japan and its culture not as Orientalism, but as a serious, interpretable experience. This work, reconstructed in the language of contemporary art, is not a Japanese tea ceremony but relational art - a new experience to be interpreted in Western cultural context. ㅤ As in last year’s WHITE2BLACK, this exhibition consists of Chaji, a full authentic Japanese tea ceremony with Matcha Tea and Kaiseki Cuisine, for 9 people and Atomi, a Japanese tea ceremony in the style of an exhibition, for 81 people. The all elements linked and related between the Chaji and the Atomi. ㅤ I gave out 9 memento stickers to 9 participants for the Chaji experience, and the 10th one, edition number 000/009, went to the Mercer, who made this exhibition possible. Today, November 23 (CET), it was announced that Alessandro Michele is leaving Gucci after seven years as creative director. ㅤ I did the commission work "From New York to Tokyo" for his Gucci debut collection when I was in the fashion industry. The film is linked to my own work "(UN)KEEPALL", and I also embedded his 2020AW creation in my 2021 installation "(UN)KEEPALL" in Kyoto like the photos above. ㅤ I feel an afterglow from his last Gucci collection, 2023SS with 34 pairs of twins, showing the concept of reflection and identity, which was the last coincidental link. ㅤ It seems that the fashion industry has reached a critical point and is heading into a new era, as the case with Raf Simons also shows. The dominoes, which I have often spoken about to those close to me, will keep toppling for some time to come. Today, this year, Nov 6th, 2022, the day of 節分(Setsubun) and also 炉開き(Chanoyu New Year), I offline-launch a new work, "年ごとに人はやらへど目に見えぬ心の鬼はゆく方もなし WHITE-TO-BLACK". ㅤ I refer to 黒節分(Black Setsubun), the Setsubun from fall to winter, and will hold the ritual 裏追儺(Reflected-Tsuina) every year from now.
