Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day or Doll’s Day, is celebrated in Japan on March 3rd every year. The festival has a rich history that dates back to the Heian period (794-1185), rooted in both Japanese customs and Chinese traditions. The origins of Hinamatsuri can be traced back to an ancient Chinese practice called “Joshi” or “Joshi-no-sekku,” which was adopted by the Japanese court during the Heian period. This practice involved creating dolls from paper or straw and setting them afloat on rivers or the sea. It was believed that these dolls could take away evil spirits or impurities with them, thus purifying the person and bringing them good health. As this custom evolved in Japan, it gradually shifted from a spiritual cleansing ritual to a more celebratory event focused on the well-being and happiness of young girls. The practice of displaying dolls began during the Edo period (1603-1868). These dolls, known as Hina-ningyo, represent the Emperor, Empress, and their court, all dressed in the elaborate court attire of the Heian period. The doll display is set up on a tiered platform covered with a red carpet. The top tier typically features the Emperor and Empress dolls, followed by other tiers that include attendants, musicians, and sometimes items that represent the daily life of the court. The entire setup is called a Hinadan. Peach blossoms are also associated with Hinamatsuri, as the festival takes place around the time these blossoms start to bloom, symbolizing a happy and prosperous life. Traditional foods and drinks, such as chirashizushi (scattered sushi), clam soup, and amazake (a sweet, fermented rice drink), are enjoyed during the celebration. Over time, Hinamatsuri has become a day to pray for the growth, happiness, and health of girls, celebrated by families across Japan.
