  • In the park across the street, a regular pack of stray dogs hung around, lazing in the shade on the warm asphalt and marbled stone pavement. At night I’d hear them barking as they chased passers by. Over time, I became familiar with these packs of strays, randagi, that each had their own territory in the old parts of town. They roamed around the harbour at the cruise ship terminal and in the street markets, circling the butcher stands that sold offal and pane con milza. At night I’d find them sleeping curled up in cardboard boxes that were left for them. They were part of the intricate fabric of the city. At the time, wandering the city, I felt drawn to individual characters. Some of them had names, although nobody knew how they got them. Like the black-and-white TomTom, whose white fur was so saturated with dirt it had turned grey, and Barone, a gentle giant of a dog and a fixture of the Ballaró. Looking at them now, I’m aware of a repertoire of poses and gestures. In each other’s company, they perform a canine dance of themes and variations, radiating the comradery between them that I experienced being around them. Still, all these dog bodies lying on ground, the stillness of the round foetal positions they often sleep in, sometimes curled up in niches carved out of the ground as if they were already in a grave, emanate gravity and temporality. They make me think about our mortality and about the space we occupy in regard to others, individually and as humans alongside other sentient beings. About what it means to belong, to a pack and to a species. I feel a sense of longing observing these dogs that together form a collective body, gentle and humble.   • Three editions were presented at Paris Photo 2022 with @goligagoliga editions (booth SE15). 💫 In the attic of my parents house during the last days of December 2018 and the first days of January 2019 I added brushstrokes with black ink to three separate horse figures printed in silkscreen, resulting in the edition ‘Gris, Noir, Blanc’. The edition ‘Mask’ is a reproduction of a small watercolor made by my father, the artist Peter Dumas. It’s one of eight different quick sketches of a small sculpture of a goat that he must have made at least some fifteen years ago. They show a part of my dad’s work that was more free and direct. Aside from elaborate and often large detailed watercolors depicting facades of buildings, he painted from life. With his painting materials beside him in a small white suit case, sitting in fields or on beaches, and on the docks of small harbours in France and Italy, he painted and drew what he saw. The portraits of the mask he made at home seem to have been done in one sitting. They are introverted studies in which I also see him reflected. I think he related to this mask as he did to the many facades of buildings he painted during his career, that what is visible for everyone and that what’s behind the facade, a space protected and private. ‘Mask’ relates to the two editions Noir, Gris, Blanc and Ai (love) presenting a familial bond of three generations. ‘Ai’ ( Love) features a portrait of a horse and a little girl in a horse suit. The girl is my daughter Ivy with whom I made a short film titled Yorihshiro when she was just five years old. In Ivy I recognize the observant and creative nature of my father. Her free and autonomous spirit inspires me greatly. In more ways than one I feel like I’m on the receiving end of both my dad’s and Ivy’s creative energy that allows me to work the way I do.   • Eleven years ago this book was published in collaboration with @the.ice.plant ten years after 9/11, portraying some of the dogs then still alive, that searched the rubble of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Retrieved is still on view @911memorial museum in New York City.
