Gerry exchanged ideas with Taro to come up with a new shape that allowed him to draw smooth lines he’s renowned for in any kind of conditions. Featuring a pointy nose for outstanding float in the powder, a minimal taper to allow for sharp, yet light and lively performance for the so-called “Hot-Dog” riding style. A subtle “short-camber” system has also been incorporated to allow the NoKaOi to perform in the variable conditions of the Pacific Northwest. I guess it was the nose outline looking more like a surfboard that hooked me in one glance. When I rode it,in prime Niseko conditions on perfectly groomed corduroy,I realized that this was a board that was really above my snowboard skill level. It was designed to go a lot faster and turn a lot harder than I was comfortable with.Don’t get me wrong,I enjoyed the speed and precision of it but in my mind,it was like giving a Pipeline big wave gun to a mid level surfer to ride small Waikiki waves.Over the years and many turns I’ve enjoyed with Taro and his crew,I’ve had the good fortune to ride most of their different models and, amazingly,there were none I didn’t like, just some that I liked more. At one point,Taro asked if I was interested in creating a model of my own. Basically, like with my surfboard orders,a person tells me what he wants,then I shape the board with that in mind, so this is what Taro suggested. I was riding the Chaser HP model and liked everything about it except I felt it was too wide for me. Taro and I talked about this at length, then he said he had an idea in mind. We decided to call the board the Aloha NoKaOi which is a combination of Hawaiian phrases: Aloha simply means Love among other things and No Ka Oi is just ‘the best’. The first prototype was excellent,the graphic was similar to a special surfboard lamination called an acid splash and it rode like the wind.It loved the powder whether it was a little or a lot. And if there wasn’t any fresh snow,it took to the groomers like a champion. Because this prototype had no camber like the original TT model, I felt it was on the edge of my control skills in the tight trees and asked Taro if,maybe we could fix that. He came up with a modified camber that I feel makes the board even more friendly and easy to ride in pretty much any and all snow conditions.Like all their boards, the NoKaOi enjoys all top grade components; base,core, topsheet and high grade steel edges. It’s truly a katana worthy to all samurai.I’m truly humbled that I get to put my name on this great snowboard. Mahalo Taro san.
