The pieces are still a bit rough around the edges, but they combine elements of my earlier works and recent creations into a hybrid style that I hope will lead to the next step forward. When I was in my twenties, I used to shop around here, and in my thirties, I often passed by for work. Most of the stores from those days are gone now, but SHELTER has been going strong for 25 years in Ebisu — truly an inspiration, and I feel very honored. A heartfelt thank you to everyone in Suwa and to all those who came by! I was able to reconnect with some former colleagues living in the area, and I had the chance to enjoy the incredible work of the ReBuilding Center team, delicious meals, Suwa’s hot springs, and the cherry blossoms that reached their peak a little later than in Kanagawa. The arm of the lamp is made from recycled plastic, and of course, I built it myself at home using DIY methods. I’ve also been collecting plastic waste with the support of two amazing local shops in Hayama. The idea came to me after a research trip to ReBuilding Center Japan (RCJ) in Suwa. On the way back, we made a stop at the National Astronomical Observatory—and I was beyond excited (especially since it happened to be the day of the planetary alignment!). Spending time with variously shaped marine debris is truly a precious experience for me. 🤩 I’ve always been drawn to vibrant colors—tropical, pastel, and gradients—but lately, I find myself longing for a gray, ambiguous, and neutral way of life while working on my creations. During the exhibition, Pimlico Arts JAPAN will host a workshop where participants can create their own original light by assembling parts made from marine plastic and reclaimed materials collected by PAJ, bringing soft and warm illumination into their space. We aim for a two-way interactive experience using original AR technology, and all participants will receive a PAJ upcycled acrylic keychain as a gift. The workshop will be held on April 4th (Friday), 5th (Saturday), 14th (Monday), and 15th (Tuesday) with two sessions each day: morning from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and afternoon from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The participation fee is ¥8,800 (tax included), and each session is limited to four groups. This time, photographer Kenji Ijima used a photo we took together on Christmas Eve in the satoyama (woodlands) of Hayama as the main visual for the exhibition. I truly appreciate his support! memoryPACK is a work that represents the digital society and petroleum society on its two sides. During the shoot, he remarked on the fascinating connection between forests and the piece—how the trees and plants on the surface are supported by the hidden world of fungi in the soil. That moment left a strong impression on me, making it a memorable Christmas experience. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Records and Memories.” Since memoryPACK perfectly embodies this theme, I will be exhibiting nine of them.
