The story opens with a pivotal scene at Tokyo Station. On Platform 13, a machine-tool merchant and a waitress from a traditional restaurant witness a man believed to be a government official boarding the limited express Asakaze on Platform 15—accompanied by another waitress from the same restaurant. At the time, Platform 13 (then serving the Yokosuka Line) offered a rare, unobstructed view of the Asakaze. By exploiting a narrow four-minute window—from 5:57 p.m.—when no train blocked the sightline, the novel introduced its groundbreaking device: “the blank four minutes.” This ingenious use of time and space captivated readers and brought the novel widespread acclaim. In the hotel’s History Gallery, visitors can view the opening pages of the very first installment of Points and Lines, originally serialized in the magazine Tabi, along with historical timetables showing rail services between Tokyo and Kyushu, including the sleeper limited express Asakaze. And there’s more, A replica of the sleeper train Asakaze is also on display at Tokyo Station, complete with its iconic headmark. ... 前投稿のつづき・・スレートを語るうえで忘れてはならない出来事があります。復原工事中の2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災。石巻に保管されていた天然スレートは、津波の被害を受けました。流されたのは石材だけではありません。家屋も、工場も、昨日までそこにあったものが、濁流にのみ込まていきました。それでも被災後、石巻の人々は泥に埋もれたスレートをかき集め、一枚一枚を洗い、東京へと送り届けくれたのです。そのスレートは東京駅丸の内駅舎の重要な中央部分に、屋根の一部として使われています。東京ステーションホテルには間近にスレート屋根を見られる場所があります。ご宿泊の際はアトリウムのスタッフに、お声がけください。 3月11日は私たちにとっても、忘れることのできない日なのです。 Continued from the previous post… There is also a moment in history that cannot be forgotten when speaking about this slate. ... 東京駅丸の内駅舎の屋根には天然スレートが葺かれています。天然スレートとは玄昌石（げんしょうせき）という石の一種で、習字のすずりなどに使われる素材です。創建当時、駅舎には32万枚もの雄勝産（現宮城県石巻市雄勝町）の天然スレートが使用されていました。その後、戦災復興を含む数回にわたる葺替えでは、一時登米産・陸前高田産が使われていた時期があります。保存・復原工事では、登米産の状態の良いものは再利用されました。一枚一枚洗浄し、目視と打音によって劣化状態を確認しながら選別。形状を整え、足りない分は創建時と同じ雄勝産天然スレートの新材を手配しました。そうして2012年、雄勝産、登米産、スペイン産の約43万枚のスレートが、創建当時と同じ一文字葺きという手法で、職人の手によって葺かれ、重厚に黒く光る駅舎の屋根が完成しました。次投稿につづく・・ The roof of Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, where the hotel is located, is covered with natural slate. Natural slate is a type of stone known as genshoseki, the same material traditionally used for Japanese calligraphy inkstones. When the station first opened, about 320,000 pieces of natural slate from Ogatsu (Ishinomaki, Miyagi) were used on the roof. In later years, including during postwar reconstruction, slate from Tome and Rikuzentakata was also used in subsequent reroofing. During the preservation and restoration project, new slate from Ogatsu—the same source used at the time of the station’s construction—was selected, while well-preserved slate from Tome was carefully reused. Each piece was washed and inspected individually through visual checks and tapping tests to assess its condition. Pieces of different shapes were then adjusted to recreate the original ichimonji-buki roofing pattern. And so in 2012, approximately 430,000 slate tiles from Ogatsu, Tome, and Spain were laid by skilled craftsmen using the same Ichimonji-buki technique as when the building was first constructed, completing the station building’s roof with its deep, lustrous black finish. ... 創建当時の東京駅丸の内駅舎は庇を保持するための支持部材（ブラケット）にも、丁寧な装飾が施されていました。金属製だっため、戦時中の供出によって失われていましたが、保存・復原工事にともない元の姿に甦りました。唐草模様やヴォリュート（左右対称の渦巻き形・南ウィングのみ）の繊細で優雅な意匠と赤レンガのコントラストが、建築の表情を豊かにしています。 When Tokyo Station first opened in 1914, even the wall-mounted support brackets were carefully decorated. Though lost during the war due to metal requisition, they were restored during the preservation and restoration project. ... 井伊直弼。この場所で人生を終えた幕末の老中。井伊直弼が指揮した安政の大獄では、多くの若き志士たちが命を落としました。そして1860年、ここ桜田門外で起きた「桜田門外の変」によって、自らもまたその生涯を閉じます。歴史の一側面だけを見れば苛烈な指導者。けれど見方を変えれば、失われつつあった幕府の権威と、未来永劫続くはずだった幕府の存在を守ろうとした立場も浮かび上がってきます。この場所に立つたび、時代の狭間で決断を迫られた彼の想いに、触れるような気がするのです。 Ii Naosuke — a senior minister of the late Edo period — met the end of his life at this very place. He led the Ansei Purge, during which many young samurai lost their lives. And in 1860, he himself was assassinated here in what became known as the Sakuradamon Incident. History often remembers him as a harsh and uncompromising leader. Yet from another perspective, one can also see a man striving to protect the fading authority of the shogunate — and the very existence of a regime he believed should endure for generations. ... 上野公園といえば、徳川歴代将軍御霊廟があることで知られる東叡山寛永寺（とうえいざんかんえいじ）。天台宗の総本山である比叡山延暦寺にならい、「東の比叡山」という意味の名で、天海によって1625年に創建されました。境内を庶民が自由に出入りできる憩いの場とすべく整備されたこの場所は、いまでは国内外からの多くの人々から親しまれる、桜の名所でもあります。本堂である根本中堂（こんぽんちゅうどう）は、川越喜多院から移築され、上野東照宮の用材も加えて再建されたものです。喜多院とは、徳川家光が川越大火後に再建し、家光が誕生した客殿や、乳母の春日局が大奥で使用していた書院が移築されている寺院。東照宮とは家康を東照大権現として祀る神社で、日光や久能山、鳳来山が有名ですが全国にたくさんあります。ここひとつを訪れるだけでも、歴史上の様々な出来事と人物に触れることができる、歴史好きにはたまらない場所。上野駅から程近い不忍池辨天堂や清水観音堂などからは少し離れているせいか、観光客も少なく、穏やかな時間が流れています。江戸を造った徳川家康。その江戸城内の武家屋敷があった場所に建つ東京ステーションホテル。歴史は繋がっていますね。東京ステーションホテルから上野公園へはJRで約5分。上野駅の公園口が便利です。 Ueno Park is home to Kaneiji Temple (Toeizan Kaneiji), the mausoleum site of successive Tokugawa shoguns. The temple was founded in 1625 by the monk Tenkai, modeled after Mt. Hiei’s Enryakuji Temple in Kyoto, the head temple of the Tendai sect, and was named Toeizan, meaning “Mt. Hiei in the East.” Tenkai also envisioned the temple grounds as a public space where townspeople could freely come and go, a legacy that continues today as Ueno Park welcomes countless visitors from Japan and around the world. It is also one of Tokyo’s most beloved cherry blossom viewing spots. Tokugawa Ieyasu, who laid the foundation of Edo (today’s Tokyo), also had a close link to The Tokyo Station Hotel, which stands within the former samurai residences of Edo Castle. The history truly connects across time. What day is it today? 今日、10月14日は〈鉄道の日〉。 1872年、日本に鉄道が開通した年に、日本初の本格的なフランス料理店「精養軒」が築地で誕生しました。「宿泊の帝国、食の精養軒」と称されるほど評判を博し、日本における西洋料理の普及に大きく貢献しました。東京ステーションホテルは開業当初、この精養軒にマネジメントを委ねていたという歴史があります。残念ながら関東大震災で築地精養軒をはじめ各営業拠点が被災したため契約は解消されましたが、かつてはホテルのお客様も親しんだ精養軒が、現在も上野の杜に佇み、明治から続く歴史を紡いでいることに、感慨深い思いを抱きます。東京ステーションホテルから、上野恩賜公園にある上野精養軒本店の最寄り駅・上野までは、JRで約5分。博物館や美術館、図書館などもあり、少し時間があるときに立ち寄るのもおすすめです。 In 1872, the year Japan’s first railway opened, Seiyoken, the country’s first authentic French restaurant, was established in Tsukiji. Praised as “the Empire of lodging, the Seiyoken of dining,” it played a major role in spreading Western cuisine across Japan. When The Tokyo Station Hotel first opened, its management was entrusted to Seiyoken. Sadly, the Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the Tsukiji branch and other locations, ending that partnership. Yet, Seiyoken continues to stand gracefully in Ueno Park, welcoming guests and carrying on its history from the Meiji era—a truly moving testament to over 150 years of tradition. From The Tokyo Station Hotel, Ueno Station — the nearest station to Seiyoken’s main branch in Ueno Onshi Park — is about a 5-minute ride by JR.
