At Dalton Tokyo, we strive to put this philosophy into practice through our daily educational activities. At the same time, we emphasize that the freedom and opportunities offered by our school come hand in hand with self-discipline and responsibility. Our teachers continually remind students of the importance of these values. In this morning's Foundation Lab for Grade 7 students, the focus was on a key element of collaboration: empathy. Students formed mixed-gender groups across House boundaries and explored the feelings of others through a Cinderella reading activity. To demonstrate the task, several teachers took on the roles of the story's characters and performed an expressive reading in front of the class. Their enthusiastic performance delighted the students and quickly filled the room with laughter and excitement. Through creative learning experiences such as this, our teachers continue to communicate the core messages of the Dalton Plan in engaging and meaningful ways. Two of the alumni who led the session are currently sophomores at Keio University and Waseda University, respectively. Another alumnus joined the meeting online from J. F. Oberlin University. The event featured a variety of competitions, including the jump rope challenge that students had practiced diligently for, the “Typhoon Relay,” which tested each team's ability to work together, and the highly anticipated “Serious Relay,” where some of the fastest runners in the school competed against one another. Throughout the day, students gave their all in every event. Despite being held on a weekday, many parents and alumni came to the arena to support the students, offering warm and enthusiastic encouragement from the stands. Although Dalton has only two graduating classes so far, our first and second cohorts, approximately 50 alumni returned to cheer on their younger schoolmates. Seeing the sign-in sheet filled with the names of so many familiar graduates was a moving reminder of how much they continue to care about their alma mater. It was also a day that reaffirmed the strong bonds that connect our community, transcending House affiliations and reflecting the unique spirit of Dalton. According to local teachers, past programs further strengthened Thai students’ motivation to learn Japanese and led to an increase in the number of students passing the JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test). The day began with a special lecture on Noh theater. At lunchtime, the students enjoyed lunch together with Dalton students in the cafeteria, and in the afternoon they joined English and music classes. In a Grade 3 English class, Dalton students each gave presentations and received feedback from the visiting students. Presenting in front of native English-speaking students must have been nerve-racking, but they spoke with confidence and composure. In a Grade 5 class, the students from the UK joined group discussions about school life, including topics such as school uniforms and daily routines. The exchange of ideas seemed to be a valuable and inspiring experience for everyone involved. By coincidence, students and teachers from St. Joseph College in the UK were also visiting that day and had the opportunity to experience the history, spirituality, and performance of Noh. DSC (Dalton Student Council) is a student-led organization founded in the school’s first year by a small group of students who hoped to make the school an even better place. What began as a small first step has now grown into Dalton’s largest student organization, with more than 100 students voluntarily participating each year. The students of DSC are divided into six committees, General Affairs, Planning, Environment, Broadcasting, Public Relations, and Library, each playing an important role in supporting school life. As the 6th graders gradually step back to focus on college preparations and pass the baton to younger students, the 5th graders who will lead DSC from now on stood at the front gate before classes this morning, inviting new members to join. Since the school’s founding, Dalton students have naturally shared responsibilities, mentored younger students, and passed leadership on to the next generation. Then the students corrected themselves and tried again with, “Please take a photo together.” The scavenger hunt also included a variety of other missions, such as “Find something (or someone) that starts with the letter T” and “Find something orange.” Under the blue sky, students walked around the campus in groups, enjoying the activity like a treasure hunt. One of the keys to language learning is not being afraid of making mistakes. This scene captures them practicing interviews as part of their Japanese assignment, “Digging Deep into a Person’s Life.” Before conducting an interview, students are required to make appointments in advance. At the same time, they are taught that simply asking questions at random is not enough; Mr. Arima responds by asking them, “Why is that question necessary?” encouraging them to reflect on the intention behind each question. In Dalton, students and teachers share a close and friendly relationship, and warm communication is part of everyday life. In today’s grade meeting, students were guided to think backwards from their future goals: what they hope to do after graduation, which academic fields, faculties, and universities would best support those aspirations, and what steps they should take and when in order to reach those goals. Going forward, each student will continue their own career and university research, and will present their plans and ideas to both parents and teachers during the upcoming conferences. After the plenary session, students moved to their respective classrooms for individual brainstorming and discussion sessions with their House Advisors. Having spent years pursuing their own interests and passions, many Dalton students already seem to have a general idea of the direction they wish to take. In response, she shifted her thinking away from teacher-centered instruction toward a more student-centered style of learning, in which children learned from one another. Believing that “people understand something most deeply when they teach it,” Parkhurst introduced a system in which older students served as tutors for younger ones. In this model, the teacher was not someone who simply transmitted knowledge, but rather an advisor who supported and guided each student’s learning. Starting from the practical reality that “one teacher alone cannot manage everything” in a rural school Parkhurst spent the following decades refining both the theory and practice of her ideas, eventually developing what became known as the Dalton Plan. Although the weather is unfortunately rainy, student members of the executive committee took the lead in coordinating schedules and movement around campus so that each house could share the limited indoor spaces while practicing for the events. The school building is already filled with an atmosphere that feels just like the real event day, overflowing with students’ energy and sense of unity. String Ensemble Club performed three pieces: “Jupiter,” “Pomp and Circumstance,” and “Amazing Grace.” Before each performance, one of the students introduced the background and appeal of the music, allowing the audience to appreciate not only the beauty of the pieces but also the results of the students’ daily practice. With new members joining, it was especially heartwarming to see String Ensemble Club’s tradition being passed down across grade levels since the school’s founding year. Glee Club then performed “Love Is an Open Door” from Frozen, “Marunouchi Sadistic” by Sheena Ringo, “Sucker for You” by Matt Terry, and “Runaway Baby” by Bruno Mars, with different members taking the stage for each song. It was a joyful performance that vividly conveyed the students’ love of singing. One of Dalton’s unique qualities is the large number of students who are passionate about art and music. During their visit, they conducted a class in the Senior Division STEAM Lab, met with the principal, and toured the campus, gaining a deeper understanding of our educational activities and inquiry-based learning approach. The visitors showed great interest in Dalton’s educational philosophy and practices, and engaged in meaningful discussions on the future development of international partnerships and educational exchange programs.
