For her, the spider was a symbol of her mother, a weaver who oversaw the family tapestry workshop and a calm, diligent force whom Bourgeois characterized as her “best friend.” The complexity of motherhood is conveyed through a spider that is both a repairer, healing wounds with its threads, and a menacing predator. For Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei, the program participants served as youth ambassadors for the exhibition and produced audio commentaries introducing the works on display in their own words (Active on four days between May 26 and July 20, 2024). During the four-day activity, four groups of youth ambassadors made up of various age groups each created manuscripts while learning about the historical, social, and cultural context behind the works with museum staff. The audio commentaries, recorded voices of the participants, were produced in a variety of formats, including dialogue and talk show style, depending on the works they chose. The audio sources can be accessed from the museum's website and the viewing leaflet "A Guide to Afro-Mingei" distributed at the venue. These are called binbo tokkuri bottles, loaned to saké store customers who were making only a small purchase of 1.8 liter or 0.9 liters from late Edo period (mid-19th century) to early Showa period (early 20th century). They highlight a particular form yet in different sizes produced in Japan’s pottery towns, namely in cities like Tokoname, Bizen, Seto, and Tamba. In a collaboration with potter Tani Q (b. 1977) whose grandfather collected these vbinbo tokkuri, each and every one of these vessels are stamped with the logo for Gates’ latest Japanese project, Mon Industries (mon meaning “gate” in Japanese). Having lost its utility and become obsolete, the binbo tokkuri is reborn as a contemporary emblem of ritual and cultural significance. Moved by the sculptural possibilities in clay, Gates experiments with hybrid forms that evoke African, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese ceramic traditions. The “Black Vessel” series highlights the alchemical role that ash and the flame play in the days-long firing process. An anagama (cave kiln) is fueled with firewood, the flames of which affect the surface of a vessel and produce a distinctive texture on the clay body. He has rescued, cared for, and reactivated an array of abandoned buildings and objects, including the personal effects left behind by artists and friends who have passed, or ephemera from sources that played a vital role in his community - a church, a prominent publisher of Black magazines, record shop, hardware store, and so on - but were demolished or went out of business. Gates, deeply influenced by the values of Shintoism - namely, the life within things - dedicates a significant portion of his practice to honoring and recontextualizing articles and places left behind.
