In Session 1, architects Kazuyo Sejima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto will explore the present-day significance of architecture and its future potential in the light of Fujimoto’s work, using the contents of the exhibition as a departure point for discussion. Diemut’s work is characterized by its intrinsic entanglement of art and science. She collaborates with scientists in the fields of AI, synthetic biology, human and plant genetics, quantum physics, and astrophysics to explore how science and technology shape the world. Three Approaches to Synthetic Entities is an installation based on her research on humans and AI. The work features a debate between two adversarial AI machines (Eris’ Apple), an externalized inner soliloquy (Monologue), and an interactive piece where viewers can participate in a dialogue with an AI (El Turco / Living Theater). Adrián Villar Rojas conceives long-term collaborative projects that take the shape of large-scale and site-specific installations. Within his practice, which mixes sculpture, drawing, video, literature, and performance, the artist explores the conditions of a humanity at risk, on the verge of extinction or already extinct. The sculptures forming the series “The End of Imagination” are born from an amalgamation of a software system called the Time Engine, which models virtual worlds across hours and even millions of years. It then produces rendered data pertaining to the physical consequences of time on a sculpture or artifact, which is later given a real-life, tangible form through meticulous manual labor. With 3D animation, sound, and gaming technology, Jakob Kudsk Steensen creates immersive works that bring to life often overlooked natural phenomena through virtual simulations. The Ephemeral Lake is inspired by the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich and comprises live video simulations, sound, and glass lamp sculptures. Examining the titular natural phenomenon of ephemeral lakes, which periodically appear and disappear in dry, barren land, he combines photographs, 3D scans, and other fieldwork data to create a virtual lake and its ecosystem. Jacolby Satterwhite is recognized for his video works that fuses pop-cultural and religious iconographies with Afrofuturism, the African American ideals of a liberated future. Queering and disrupting accepted norms, he questions how latest technologies can serve the Black and LGBTQ+ communities by opening up and imagining new possibilities. His practice is also influenced by his mother, the self-taught artist Patricia Satterwhite. A Metta Prayer is a video installation inspired by the Buddhist Metta prayers. His research delves into the political and industrial history of different regions, often on a geological timescale. Silicon Serenade is inspired by the fact that the silicon used to make semiconductor wafers—an essential component of modern digital technology products—can be extracted from sandy beaches. The installation consists of VR goggles attached to an oscillating buoy, video of a virtual seaside and underwater cello performance, footage inside Taiwanese AI company Industrial Technology Research Institute, and an AI-generated music composition. In Fujikura Asako’s 3D computer graphics video works, industrial materials move and act like living creatures inside colorful virtual cities. Inspired by her own early upbringing in suburban areas, where large highways and infrastructures create an unchanging and homogenized landscape, Fujikura’s practice attempts to discover the invisible laws that govern how standardized urban space is produced. Impact Tracker is a three-channel video work based on her research on the Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, where renewable energy and large logistics warehouses are being built. They have collaborated on producing such works as Anatomy of an AI System, a visual representation of their research on AI technology. While in graduate school, Sato Ryotaro began creating films with game engines and data assets for game development, which are circulating widely online. His video works follow a series of absurd stories in which various characters such as soldiers, girls, and animals repeatedly appear. They are inspired by the culture of sampling and MAD videos as well as short stories by the novelist Abe Kobo. In the photo series “Dummy Life,” Sato replaces people and objects from online photographs with assets. The new video work Outlet features a crowd of assets living in a virtual space. Since 2022, he has been producing a series of films titled “DOKU” (a title inspired by a Mahayana Buddhist phrase meaning “we are born alone, and we die alone”), in which a namesake avatar, who is a digital incarnation of the artist himself, journeys through different dimensions of the Buddhist spiritual world, offering a captivating perspective on life and death, and self and non-self. Anicka Yi has cultivated a highly unique artistic practice that explores the fluid intersection between biology and technology. Her recent painting series “ÄLñ§ñ (Alien Ocean)” and “Kñ†M£M (Quantum Foam)” integrate images amassed through years of laboratory research and data from her earlier works, processed by machine learning generative networks. The resulting works feature multiple reflective and transparent layers that evoke the sensation of a dynamic, moving relief. Radial Sensation (from the series “Radiolaria”) is a sculpture constantly pulsating and softly moving. In 2007, he embarked on his ongoing project "Everydays," a series of digital images that he composes and shares online every single day. This sustained practice enabled him to cultivate a reputation in the digital art community, where artists and enthusiasts gather online to share and discuss digitally generated artworks. Beeple burst onto the contemporary art scene when his NFT artwork "EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS" (2021) was sold at an auction for a record-breaking price, triggering a broad awareness of digital art and NFTs. The kinetic video sculpture "HUMAN ONE" is the first ever physical artwork by Beeple that embraces both the virtual and the real. It represents "the first human" born inside the metaverse. The mysterious traveler walking tirelessly through a series of constantly shifting digital landscapes is a metaphor for the increasingly digitized condition of human existence. The virtual landscape is constantly updated by Beeple, who has committed himself to make modifications to the work throughout the rest of his life.
