It might seem outdated to some, especially now that everything is digital—the same goes for photography. But personally, I love the idea. I’m the kind of person who’s still attached to real, tangible objects. A family photo album that you can flip through, the tradition of writing postcards when I travel, and now, a handwritten family recipe book—it all feels so special. There‘s something about holding these pieces of our history in your hands that makes them more meaningful, more alive. This book won’t just be about recipes. It will carry stories of our meals together, the laughter shared around the table, and the memories that food has helped us create. Someday, when Lola opens it, she won’t just see instructions for dishes; she’ll feel the love and warmth of our family. In a world where eating often chases temporary satisfaction, this practice invites us to slow down, reconnect with our inner selves, and transform meals into meaningful moments. Personally, I see cooking as a meditative activity, a form of self-healing, and a way to share love, which deeply resonated with the workshop’s teachings. Jeong Kwan’s philosophy emphasizes the profound connection between nature and ourselves, encouraging a mindful and intentional approach to food. Her influence extends beyond the kitchen, inspiring renowned chefs like René Redzepi (Noma) and Éric Ripert (Le Bernardin). As a creative myself, I found her thoughts on creativity particularly moving: “Creativity and ego cannot go together. If you free yourself from a comparing and jealous mind, your creativity opens up endlessly. Just as water springs from a fountain, creativity springs from every moment. You must not be your own obstacle. You must not be owned by the environment you are in. You must own the environment, the phenomenal world around you. You must be able to freely move in and out of your mind. This is being free. There’s no way you can’t open up your creativity. There is no ego to speak of.” Her words are a profound reminder to embrace freedom in thought and creativity, a philosophy that extends far beyond cooking.
