From training at the Kawagoe Branch of Tenshin-ryu Hyoho: Maako Sensei (Takizawa Sensei) demonstrates the In-ten (陰転turning the body to the right) of Kannon-biraki 観音開(KHirakidogaeshi 開戸返). This technique is used at close range when the opponent attempts to draw their sword. From a stance with the feet opened roughly shoulder-width apart (Heisokudachi 閉足立), the practitioner performs a 90-degree body turn while maintaining the same stance. By shifting off the centerline (Nakazumi 中墨), which connects oneself and the opponent, the practitioner draws their sword and cuts to stop the opponent’s wrist. In training, we also practice against a downward vertical strike (Makko-giri 真っ向切り), fully evading it and counterattacking. 刀尖稽古（とうせんげいこ）。遠間より、接近しつつギリギリを剣先を通過させる稽古法です。間合いのコントロール、身体の遣い方など多くを学べます。また受ける側も度胸剣と、見切りの稽古になります。刀尖稽古 Tōsen-Geiko Tōsen Keiko (刀尖稽古) This is a training method in which one gradually approaches from a long distance, allowing the tip of the sword to pass extremely close to the opponent’s body without making contact. It develops essential skills such as maai (distance control) and precise body movement. For the receiving side, it is also a practice of Dokyōken(度胸剣)—the spirit of courage in combat—and mikiri(見切り), the ability to perceive and evade the opponent’s attack.

In early 2011, on the way back from a mountain training session in Ōyama (Kanagawa Prefecture). It began to snow heavily during practice, and although the training was very enjoyable, we had to cut it short and descend by cable car to avoid the risk of being stranded. Tenshin Sensei looked deeply apologetic. But for me, training in the snow was actually a valuable opportunity, so there was no problem at all.
