I am currently taking art history classes, and recently had a course on Islamic art. Since it comes from regions quite distant from the Japan and Korea where I grew up, I initially felt a vague sense of distance from it. But I soon discovered that there is an incredible diversity of cultures and people there, along with remarkable ceramics, poetry, and architecture. At the beginning and the end of each class, my professor Mélisande Bizoirre introduced poems by poets from the Islamic world. In our final session, a poem by Omar Khayyam left a deep impression on me, and it has remained in my heart ever since. I would like to keep this poem in my heart forever. - I like to end with this poem by Omar Khayyam. Last night, I went into a potter’s workshop. I saw two thousand pots, some speaking and some silent. Suddenly, one of them began to cry out. “Where is the maker of the pots, the buyer of the pots, and the seller of the pots?” Why do the pots speak in Khayyam’s poem? Where are the potter, the buyer, and the seller? Well, for Khayyam, the pot is made of clay. What the potter uses is earth. And in the earth, there are the dead—those who have been buried, the remains of those who have passed away. So when the potter shapes the clay, he is shaping the substance that contains the dead; he is, in a way, shaping their souls. And thus, each pot carries within it a soul. Where are the maker, the buyer, and the seller of the pots? They have become pots. This is, of course, an invitation to reflect on human life and its limits. But I also like to see it as a meditation on art. Let us not forget that even when our art is produced in series, even when we have fifty ceramics that look alike, each one has been shaped by someone. Each one has been thought by someone. One day, I bought some flowers and on my way home—from strangers I met on the street to the security guard in my building—so many people complimented me, saying, “What beautiful flowers!” Some even told me interesting things about them. Every day is full of greetings and communication with others.. In those moments, I felt a deep happiness realizing that the joy and excitement I feel also exist in others—and that somehow, we understand each other. Recently, I’ve been reading ~Our Hearts Are One~ by Jina Khayyer,♥️♥️@jinakhayyer and I truly feel what the title means in my everyday life. I haven’t lived long enough to speak about life deeply, but maybe this is what the joy of being human really is.
