In this old calendar, the year is divided into 72 periods of about five days each, and every subtle change in nature is given a name. Sōmoku Mebae Izuru refers to the time when grasses and trees, long dormant through winter, begin to stir quietly beneath the soil. Even before the landscape visibly changes, spring has already begun in unseen places. On this day, people refrained from entering the forest to honor the mountain deity. Depending on the region, it was observed in late winter or early winter according to the lunar calendar, and in some areas on January 16. Folklore tells that this is the day when the mountain deity counts the trees of the forest, and that anyone who enters the mountains on that day may be counted as one of the trees themselves, unable to return as a human.
