Bar、再び。 今日もカリフォルニア、サンタローザでカスタムフレームを作っているジェレミー・シシップ( @sycipdesigns )。彼のバイクは、肩の力が抜けていて、それでいて一本一本に、目を凝らすだけの価値がある。 細部に宿る手間と工夫、そして静かな確信。Jeremy自身の、ものづくりに対する姿勢そのものです。 かつてジェレミーがショールームに飾っていたバイクは彼が手曲げしたハンドルが装備されていました。 奇をてらうことのない、けれど明らかに自然な、握りたくなるかたち。 それを目にしたとき、この感覚をもっと多くの人に届けたい、そう強く思いました。 12年前、そのハンドルの製造を日東でお願いし、Sycip Bikes名義のままリリースしたのがJ.B. Barの始まりだったのです。 ところが、5年前、アメリカのとあるメーカーが日東に依頼し、製造していたワンボルト式ステムと、過度にバックスウィープしたハンドルバーとの組み合わせで、走行中にスリップ事故が起きてしまい、その影響でJ.B. Barもやむなく製造中止となったのです。 このハンドルを気に入って信じてくれている人にもう一度届けたい。日東と一緒に解決策を模索し、図面を引き直し、精度や安全性を高めました。一方で、使った人がだけが覚えているあの乗った瞬間、手と体が自然にそして微妙に馴染む、あの感覚だけは再現できるように苦心しました。 そして、今回、Sycipの横にSimWorksの名前も加えてもらい、Sycip meets SimWorksとして新しくJ.B. Bar この夏、ふたたび走りはじめます。 Jeremy Sycip, the California frame builder, once outfitted his show bike with a handlebar he bent by hand—unassuming, yet naturally shaped to fit your grip. Moved by its simplicity, we asked Nitto to produce it, and released it under the Sycip Bikes name 12 years ago. Later, a slip-related accident involving a highly backswept bar and a single-bolt stem led to production halts—including the J.B. Bar due to its similar shape. Still, we wanted to bring it back for those who believed in it. Working closely with Nitto, we revised the design, enhanced safety, and worked tirelessly to preserve that distinct feeling—when hands and body sync instinctively on the first ride. "I thought making a tire would be a little easier ;)” Nao Tomii murmured at the midpoint of development. Tread patterns, logo placement, mold limitations, casing structure... How do you overcome manufacturing constraints while holding onto the ideal form? Even with all the experience SimWorks has accumulated, nothing came easily. Yet, Nao remained consistently positive. He kept thinking, choosing his words carefully, and frequently responded, "Let me figure out a better way." That very attitude breathed the essence into this tire. Faraway isn't a tire for following trails. It's a tire for turning the paths you've taken into the right ones. You can turn back if you want, or take a detour. All you need to do is make the road you're on your own. "Someday, I want to leave these tire tracks in the deserts of Arizona..."
