Here are photos of the making of the mutations album. Thankfully, @autumndewilde who was a good friend, and just starting to get deeper into her photography, was there with her camera to capture the two week marathon of recording. This is the only album I’ve made that was documented by a photographer, and it means a lot to have these photos of that moment—The beloved United Studios on Sunset Boulevard is now closed; The old Ampex tape machines no longer used; The one of a kind Dalcon recording console built by Bill Putnam is long gone. The studio was one of the last relics left from the late 50s 1960s where Sinatra and the mamas and papas made many classics. It was my first album recorded in a proper recording studio with a producer, band and budget. Me and @justinmeldaljohnsen @joeywaronker @rogerjosephmanning and Smokey Hormel had been together on the road for two years straight, surviving a relentless whirlwind world tour after the success of the Odelay album. We were all hungry to get in the studio and do some thing creative again after being prisoners of the road during the nonstop promotion of the previous album. I spent the Christmas holidays gathering a handful of songs together. OK computer had just come out and I liked the sounds of the drums on that record so I reached out to Nigel Godrich the producer and we got together for a day or two at United at the beginning of the year. The first song we recorded was called cold brains, the first song on the album. It came together exactly as I had hoped. I remember wanting to start recording the album right there and then. Nigel said he had 14 days in March so we reconvened with the intention of recording the entire album plus the B sides in that 14 days. As records could take months up to years at the time it was quite ambitious, more of an ethos and approach from the 1960s and 70s. Mutations25 Photos by @autumndewilde
