We’d been hiking up this mountain for hours and it was a welcomed stop. You have to take your shoes off to enter and we could tell no one else was inside because… no other shoes. So we go in, bow at the altar, spend a few quiet moments inside. And when I walked out to its balcony, this was the view: nothing but forest beneath us and tiny islands in the distance dotting Hiroshima Bay. We spent another 10 minutes here. Taking a rest. Enjoying the privacy and the calm.
