We spotted Korean model/club kid/style icon @Catallactics on the street in Harajuku wearing giant metal gloves that made him look like he just walked out of a video game or anime. The gloves are by @aemc888 with a coat by Korean fashion brand Thug Club (from Nubian Harajuku) and horned boots by Thug Club x Fila Korea. The glasses are Oakley Over-the-Tops. 20 street snaps we shot outside of this week’s Balmung (@balmung_tokyo) fashion show in Tokyo. Please leave a comment to let us know which snap(s) you liked the best! Balmung is a cult Japanese fashion brand known for their very original designs and incredible silhouettes. With a designer that came up from the streets of Harajuku, Balmung has been doing its own thing for 14+ years - influencing other brands and trends without compromising their very focused vision. Several years ago, Balmung’s designs served as a major inspiration (for lower tier brands) during the birth of what’s now known as “Jirai Kei” fashion. Balmung was also way ahead of what people now call “Y2K” - creating graphic photo print “tattoo tops”, super wide pants, and other staples long before “Y2K” became a fashion term. Highly influential and defiantly original - while remaining under the radar of much of the mainstream fashion press, especially in the west - there are few Japanese fashion brands that we follow as closely as Balmung. Stella (@shinobu.stella) is a 20-year-old physics student (with a focus on next-generation battery technology) from China who is currently attending college in London. She was visiting Tokyo when we spotted her on the street in Harajuku. Here’s @ticomeba.ito - a 20-year-old Japanese vampire, Bunka Fashion College student, and the newest shop girl at legendary Harajuku kawaii boutique 6%DOKIDOKI. Ito’s Monster High Draculaura inspired street style features 1990s Swear London monster boots with 25+ cm platforms, a jacket by FRUiTS Magazine favorite 90s Harajuku fashion brand Bananafish, and other vintage pieces from the FRUiTS/Y2K era of Harajuku. Ito’s pink striped hair and numerous piercings are always part of her style, and she’s known as Tokyo’s tallest Japanese Neo Decora, even without the huge platforms. She’s also wearing a completely black contact in her left eye, which you can see in the closeup photos. Rikito is a 20-year-old Japanese beauty school student who’s become well-known in the Harajuku street style scene this year as a result of his very original sense of style. Rikito (@satimaro.jp) often combines kimono, geta, and traditional Japanese fashion elements with a mix of more modern vintage fashion pieces (sometimes from vintage shops, sometimes borrowed from his mom) along with shironuri makeup influenced by everything from manga to classic French mimes. While Rikito’s favorite fashion designer is Japanese legend Yohji Yamamoto, we never see him wearing brand clothing. Haruka (@lullaby_loosely) is a Japanese classical violinist who loves fashion and is a popular personality in the Harajuku scene. She’s worked at several boutiques in the Harajuku area. When we met her, she was at HEIHEI. Now, she’s at Vintage QOO. Haruka has dedicated most of her life, starting when she was a very young child, to her love of the violin. Haruka was accepted to a renowned Tokyo music school and studied there until she started having doubts. After focusing on violin alone for so long, and finding new interests (including fashion) as a young adult, she began to question what she really wanted to do with her life. Taking time to think about the future, Haruka decided to make major changes. She recently left music school to explore new ways forward. Haruka still loves violin and plays it regularly (even for events in Harajuku), but now she wants to find a way to mix her love of fashion and music to help inspire others. 80 Tokyo Street Styles at Tokyo Fashion Week Which are your favorite street style looks from Tokyo Fashion Week? We spent more than a full week shooting street style in neighborhoods all over Tokyo - from Shibuya, Aoyama, Omotesando, and Harajuku to Odaiba, Ueno, and in some locations we still aren’t sure where we were. Part of the excitement of Tokyo Fashion Week is racing between runway shows to try to catch the street style of guests as they enter and leave. We have a lot of fun seeing people from all over the world - photographers, fashion week guests, and non-Tokyo-based Japanese fashion students and industry people who we only see twice a year during Tokyo Fashion Week. This season, we were lucky that Japanese designer Mikio Sakabe returned to the Tokyo Fashion Week schedule, holding a massive runway show and party at the famous Yoyogi National Stadium in Harajuku. While Fashion Week in Tokyo will likely never rival Paris (the biggest Japanese designers all show in Paris or New York rather than locally), it’s a great time to see lots of unique street style around the city. Happy 2024 everyone!! The start of the new year in Japan means shrine visits and the Coming of Age Day (Seijin no Hi) holiday. On Coming of Age day every January, Japanese young people who have reached the age of 20 celebrate adulthood by dressing up in traditional kimono or hakama, going to a local ceremony (usually in the town where they graduated from high school), visiting a shrine with family, and then partying late into the night with friends. We’ve been shooting kimono on Coming of Age day for many years, and while the number of young people in Japan has been declining and most men wear suits now instead of hakama, Seijin no Hi is still the only day of the year when you’re guaranteed to see large numbers of Japanese people out and about in beautiful kimono (and kimono formal hair/makeup) in Tokyo. Harajuku Street Style Interview with Rising Japanese Fashion Designer Haruki Please leave feedback to let Haruki know what you think of his interview! Haruki Osawa (@fomore_o_hrk) is a Japanese fashion student and designer whose unique sense of style - especially around denim and remake kimono - has become popular in Harajuku over the last couple years. Haruki’s creations may sometimes seem extreme, but that’s because he is one of the most ambitious rising star designers in the Tokyo street style scene today. Ito (@ticomeba.ito) decided to talk to Haruki and find out what makes him push further than most of the other aspiring designers. Part of that answer comes from the fact that Haruki took a non-traditional path to Tokyo’s famed Bunka Fashion College, working in a factory for several years to save enough money to chase his dreams. This coming weekend, Haruki will be showing his new creations at two popup shops - one in Tokyo and one in Los Angeles, California. Every autumn, Bunka Fashion College (the top fashion school in Japan and all of Asia) holds an open campus during their school festival. The @Bunka_fc school festival is always amazing, but this year was special because the school is celebrating its 100th anniversary. We spent a day on campus during the festival shooting street snaps, meeting new people, and seeing fashion designed by students. Rei is not only fashionable - often incorporating traditional Japanese fashion into his looks - but he also has a personal story that is unique even in Harajuku. He comes from a family with a long history of becoming Japanese Buddhist priests. Japanese and raised mostly in Japan, one of his parents is American. Now studying to become a monk, he hopes to use his unique identity as an English-speaking mixed-culture person once he becomes a Buddhist priest. The next two people are both students at Vantan Fashion High School. @isshun.oshiro is wearing one of his amazing handmade looks. Last weekend, we were lucky to run into this group of gothic and lolita/subculture fashion fans on the street in Harajuku. When we met, they were coming from a tea party organized by popular punk lolita fashion designer @_hi_hibiki, whose lolita fashion brand has the motto “I am so pretty and sweet. But that’s not all. Tokyo Neo Decora Fashion Walk in Harajuku w/ Amazing Kawaii McDonald’s Japan Looks! This Neo Decora meetup was held in late September, when it should be getting cooler in Tokyo, but it still feels like summer. 150+ Tokyo Street Styles we shot at Tokyo Fashion Week in Shibuya, Harajuku & more. Let us know what you think of this huge collection of Tokyo street styles we shot in the last week! When we do street style for Tokyo Fashion Week, it means nine straight days of shooting thousands of photos and video clips. It’s always fun and we meet a lot of amazing people, but it’s also super hot during the summer (every day is over 30C). We only shoot street style, not the actual indoor runway shows, so Fashion Week gives us a chance to really see what people are wearing all over Tokyo. This season, the big show was BAPE, and we got some great snaps there, but we really love shooting outside of the shows of up-and-coming designers. Young designers often invite fashion students and other people interested in the future of fashion, rather than just what’s popular right now. Tokyo Fashion Week isn’t anywhere near as amazing as Paris Fashion Week, but if you’re ever in town when it’s happening, come out and see the fashion on the streets and runways.
