Among the things I found this letter my Mom wrote to me on my birthday 30 years ago. I would have been a sophomore in college. My Mom loved me and everything I did. So much so that it was sometimes embarrassing how over supportive she was that sometimes I had to ignore her. Looking back on this now as a parent, I understand the value of that support and the confidence it gave me growing up to know my Mom always had my back. The biggest loss I felt when she passed 10 years ago was losing that true non judgmental, unconditional love that only a Mother could give. Big lesson for me as a parent now. I have known Gary Selesner since I started dating my wife back in 2002. He was younger than I am now when we first met and was already president of Cesar’s Palace Casino. He was a kind, humble, honest and hard working man who worked his way from the ground up to be the incredible visionary leader that he was. Always calm and collected, I never once saw him blow up or even get angry. That means a lot for someone in his position carrying the entire organization on his back. Over the years, I learned how well respected he was in the Caesar’s group as everyone from the valets and dealers all the way up to the executives and customers would express how kind of a person he was. As a Father, he cared deeply about his family and always wanted to share his excitement for food and travel with all of us. I will always remember the crazy meals and exciting adventures we shared. At just 70 years old, he was taken from us too early. I was looking forward to spending the next few years learning from him in his retirement but that was not meant to be. Thank you Gary for welcoming me to your family and treating me like a son for all these years. I will always remember your gentle kindness and all of the amazing times we shared together. We were having problems with power for both of our practices which didn’t allow us to get up to pace and was extremely frustrating. It wasn’t until evening that a cracked turbo intercooler hose was affecting our boost pressure. Problem solved right? No went out early to qualify and get some solid laps in with the proper power but an accident ended the session with just three laps. No problem we’ll make it work during the race. Fast forward to the start of the race…as I was down shifting into the first corner the car just completely shuts down. Can’t get it restarted and the on board computer is showing all kinds of errors. Had to be towed back to the garage and found that the serpentine belt broke then ripped out proceeded to rip out all the wiring which ended the race for us. People always say “Well, that’s racing!” but I say “Well that just sucks!” Compounded with last DNF in the last race because of brake failure that makes two races we could not complete. My brother and grandfather’s ashes are here and now my grandmother’s ashes are here so I came here almost every weekend as a kid. I remember exploring all of the incredible spaces inside and although a lot of people have been laid to rest here, it never felt scary. This was one of the pieces of architecture that influenced me to become interested in architecture. Julia Morgan was an incredible architect known for her beautiful, timeless designs. The Chapel of the Chimes combines elements of Gothic, Romanesque, and Moorish design and is a breathtaking example of her creativity and attention to detail. Morgan’s vision turned the chapel into a serene labyrinth of light and stone, making it a sanctuary for reflection and peace. Truly an architectural masterpiece! They all had huge balconies with lots of plants growing on them. There was enough space for each owner to build extra rooms on the balcony. There was also a lake below and lots of trees and greenery. I know this is an old complex but I bet the people that live here are pretty happy. As opposed to more modern buildings with floor to ceiling glass but no direct access to the outside.
