一年を通して行われるホームスパン※の仕事は種まきから収穫までを一人でするようなものだ。羊の原毛をそのまま使うこともあるが、ほとんどは染色し、糸を紡ぎ、織り、縮絨する。マフラーは冬に向かって仕上げていくが、夏にしか染められない色もあるという。染色や紡ぎを施した羊毛は素材として準備されるが、一旦もしくは数年のあいだ寝かされることもあり、それらは小さな素材の欠片として次の出番を待つ。 2024年はこれまでも何度かテーマになった”イギリス”にピントを合わせている。例えばグレーけむるロンドンの雨空を思い出すツイード、ミルクティーのように甘いウェルシュブランケットのカントリーなチェック。ホームスパンの本場であり、スコットランド、アイルランドにも及ぶ伝統的な毛織物の渋さ甘さは永遠に魅力的だ。 上杉さんと一緒に苺のイートンメスを食べたのは4月のことだった。名門イートン校の生徒がママの持たせたお菓子を鞄の中でめちゃくちゃ（＝メス）にしてしまった、というのがお菓子の由来だそう。あの時にザクザクとスプーンで割りながら食べた赤と白のお菓子はツイード（房付き）に姿を変えた。鮮やかな春が欠片を繋ぎ合わせて、こんな風に世界は組まれたのだ。 ※ホームスパン home（家）spun（紡ぐ）の名の通り、家畜である羊の毛を刈り取り、その原毛を自宅用に紡いで織ったことがはじまりとされる。糸を織ると1枚の布になるが、ホームスパンの場合は織ってから縮絨することによって更に繊維が空気を含み、ふっくらと起き上がる。 略歴） 上杉浩子 Hiroko UESUGI ウェルシュブランケットを知ったのは、 2004年のクウネルの特集だった。 岡尾さんが選んだ毛布は全部かわいくて、 いい意味でちょっとイナタい感じで、 一瞬で恋に落ちるような気持ちになった。 今も時折り見返す、大好きなページ。 当時は自分が織の仕事をするとは 夢にも思っていなかった。 プレゼント企画があり、滅多に応募などしない私も、これは！と意気込み、 迷いに迷って選んだ一枚の毛布の番号を書いて応募券を貼って… 当たりませんでした笑 そのブランケットのイメージが、 ずっと頭の片隅に残っていたのだと思う。 ある日羊毛の整理をしているときに、 使い道に迷っていた色味のものが出てきて、 ふとウェルシュブランケットのことを思い出した。 若草のしげる小高い丘に咲く薄いピンクの小さな花。 行ったことのないウェールズの春の風景が思い浮かぶ。 ここ数年、毎年「これは！」という羊毛に出会うチャンスに恵まれている。 大抵は英国羊毛なのだが、今年はオーストラリアのメリノだ。 ひとめ見て、迷わず買った（2袋）。 オフホワイトにチラチラと混じる薄いベージュのあんばいがたまらない。 メリノならではの柔らかさに加えて弾力もありそうだ。 触った感じ、これは間違いなしの絶品。さあ、どんなものを作ろうか。 変に手を加えず、素材そのままがストールになったようなものがいい。 シェットランド島からやってきた極上羊毛をブレンドして糸にする。むっちりした弾力、よし！ 織り終わって、織り機から外すとポヨンとふくらんで、すでに最高の肌触りだ。 これは早いところ縮絨しなければ！ 人と同じで、2頭として同じ羊は存在しない。 そう考えると、ものすごい確率でここにやって来たのだと思う。 #houhomespun
