But everyday I remained excited and happy to be alive. As a young fella, I liked the action on the streets. Especially in the ruff more dangerous areas of Buffalo. Those areas though dangerous, were also lively, creative and wild. I liked the girls from those areas. I was never afraid of anything then. Even in the most life threatening and chaotic moments I experienced I was never afraid of anything. Anything except war. You see I was petrified of war. And in my youth I heard on the news everyday about the Vietnam war and all the deaths there. I was basically in a line for the draft and everyday I was getting closer to draft age. It was always on my mind and weighed heavy. I was lucky that ended just before I was old enough to get drafted. I hate war. Custom made for Sorrel Doris Hays by her friend Don Buchla himself. This all original unit was factory set up in a large brief case like a larger Music Easel. This unit is exactly like it left the factory and was custom ordered to be. Only the added briefcase decals which were added by the original owner Ms. Hays The System 101(1970-78) was a very compact polyphonic synth using modules from the 200-series. It was the smallest of the 200-series "Electric Music Boxes", designed for on-the-go musicians. Unlike the Music Easel this unit has a 32-note standard piano style keyboard in place of the Buchla-preferredtouch-platekeys for a more musician-friendly experience. This briefcase mounted 101 unit is likely the only one ever built. Luckily my good friend of 40 years Joe Uyama, from Sunlight Engineering, was available to answer a few last minute voltage and polarity questions. And luckily I had a NOS RCA 5Z3 handy. This Lansing Manufacturing Iconic speaker system was placed in this home brew prototype cabinet by a Lansing employee in the late 1940’s. It sounds incredible. One could argue the Lansing Iconic speaker system is the most influential loudspeaker systems ever produced. The Lansing Iconic was the first successful two-way system using a 15" bass-reflex driver and high-frequency horn. Which to this day is the most common configuration of professional loudspeakers. My good friend Rick Rubin laughed at this video clip and asked me “Did Fred Sanford finally go out of business?” But his laugh was not as loud as mine was, the time I watched Rick Rubin having his heavily damaged nearly deaf ears examined by an ear doctor. A friend of mine that night mentioned a new disease going around called Gay Cancer. My friend was gay and having gay sex for money. He was a very very close friend but the story he told me was at that time abstract. And I was not concerned for him. That very close friend died of AIDS by April 1982. By 1990 I lost nearly half of my closest friends to AIDS. The magnitude of impact AIDS had at the time it appeared is beyond anything I have ever known. It took the lives of so many of my closest and most brilliant friends and quickly changed the face of the New York City underground and art scene. It should reflect all the false accusations and fictitious ideas about me and my motivations, and speak to those rampant allegations of narcissism. The cover I have created achieves exactly that. It is the ultimate expression of the journalistic consensus on the film, the public’s resulting reaction to that consensus, and the feelings they then formed about me personally. Most surprising to me is that the finished product still represents the film’s esthetic sensibilities while simultaneously codifying the public’s most misguided views about the content. I have never worked so hard as I did on this film.
