We asked Hiroko Nishida, a ceramics researcher who planned and supervised that exhibition and has organized various exhibitions of ceramics at the Nezu Museum, and Tomoki Kawai, the second generation owner of the tea ceremony utensil merchant Kawazen, who is a great Holland lover, to talk about the mystery and charm of Holland as a tea ceremony ware. In Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture, where authentic tea ceremonies are often held, Holland has been appreciated, too. “I think the reason for this is that the Maeda family, the lords of the Kaga domain, put a lot of effort into promoting not only tea, but also culture, collecting not only tea ceremony utensils and furnishings, but also imported goods”. As the Japanese had never seen the leaves of a grape before, they mistook it for a tobacco leaf. This water jar was introduced to us by Nagasaka, a well-known tea ceremony utensil store among tea ceremony utensil lovers in Nagoya. After the Tokugawa Shogunate enforced self-isolation from foreign powers in the late 17th century and limited trade with Europe to the Dutch East India Company, the ceramics imported from Europe were called as “Holland” regardless of producing country. The artisans in Europe copied the patterns and designs of ceramics produced in China or Japan, while the craftsmen in Japan copied that transferware by hand and “Kyo-Holland” was created in the 19th century. Designer Kenya Hara visited the store of Soichi Hirata, who holds the rare title of chandelier restorer in Japan. At Honda, Uchida encountered various types of sake cups and vessels made in Asian and Western countries, and from different periods, including a fine white porcelain cup from Song dynasty and a colorful vessel from Delft. Although seemingly simple, Yamahai is full of charms if you look at the details. Yoshihiro Yamazaki, who lives in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, is a great fan of old kilns. His collection of pottery pieces excavated at his favorite kilns, Atsumigama exceeds more than 1,000. For instance, the master brings a set of five red lacquer same saucers called Hikihai on a black lacquer stand called Hikidai with a sake server called Choshi in the early part of the light meal course, Kaiseki. With the cups they choose on their own, the guests enjoy sake with the meal. One of the highlights of a tea ceremony is the master's elaborate arrangement of the tea utensils, taking into consideration the season and the dishes. Twenty-five years later, Ryuichi Hirano, who wrote a series of articles in this magazine titled "Behind the Scenes: Polaris in the World of Antiqurs," sought for guidelines for the future by interviewing antique dealers who have made significant marks from the Showa period to the present day. As it opened three stores in Japan, Irakado has had many employees and apprentices since the late 1980s. There are more than 10 apprentices who have become independent dealers after they worked and assumed the skills under Yoshio Aoi. Although the word "apprenticeship" may sound old-fashioned in this day and age, the term they spent as an apprentice affects them to some extent for sure.
