silk A legend is reread once more A pioneer of modern dance in Paris during the art nouveau movement, Loie Fuller (1862–1928) has been an inspiration to many artists. Her famous serpentine dance, in which she skillfully manipulated a silk costume that covered her entire body, stirred the imagination of audiences through dazzling transformations into a flame, butterfly, or flower, and took the world by storm. Choreographer Ola Maciejewska responds to this legendary part of dance history left behind by Fuller. From diligent research and an archival practice using the body, she created Loie Fuller: Research in 2011, a solo performance that unfolds in close proximity to the audience. Maciejewska then transformed this into Bombyx Mori, a work performed by three dancers. Bombyx Mori proposes a new reading of the iconic serpentine dance by focusing on its materiality, gradually building in intensity and unfolding carefully and hypnotically. Hailing from different fields, the three members of the collective have collaborated with Rone, a leading figure in French electronic music, and the Ballet national de Marseille (of which the (LA)HORDE members are directors) to create Room with a View, a hymn to liberation. A dance performed only by men, the polka chinata emerged in Bologna in the early 1900s, when unmarried men and women were not permitted to dance together in public. The acrobatic dance, in which men compete to see who can spin the fastest to attract the attention of women, gradually fell out of fashion as times changed and men and women dancing became more acceptable as well as due to the difficulty of the dance itself. Enthralled by this dance on the brink of extinction, Sciarroni launched a performance and workshop project to revive the polka chinata. Two dancers bend at the knees, lower their hips, and rotate while staring intently at one another. Suryodarmo regards the body as a vessel for memories and emotions. Her work is always based on her own experiences, including her roots in Indonesia and the education she received there as well as the twenty years she spent in Germany where she began her career as an artist. The unique and pertinent work of this performance artist is presented through both a performance and exhibition. Sweet Dreams Sweet is a performance by twenty-eight women who live in the area where the work is performed. Dressed in matching white outfits, the women dip their feet in buckets of water, which gradually stain their stockings blue. The women move slowly, their faces and expressions hidden behind veils, indistinguishable.
