The boss always puts themselves in the customers’ position to care about the food portion or whether there’s enough soup in their Wonton noodles; if there are new dishes, customers get to taste them for free so that the boss can collect feedback to better cater the needs of the neighbours. For instance, the Western District is an older community and therefore, the shop uses recipes with less chili sauce for some dishes and more dried tangerine peel for others; customers and neighbours get to greet the boss and other staff like old friends; the boss would distribute meal coupons to those in need for free, etc. - hospitality which makes one feel at home. In addition to retaining the nostalgic tastes and cultures, old shops also served as iconic landmarks of a community, carrying the collective memories of several generations, serving as a common gathering place and bringing together a group of people may previously be thought to have nothing in common. Episode 04 "Jazz, from the Ground Up'' returns to "Yuen Hing Lung Noodle Shop" in Shek Tong Tsui and we are presenting to you a true story that might resemble the plot of a movie: a group of strangers meets in a dancing class who happens to share the same bond with a noodle shop. Some of them are customers who have been visiting since childhood while others are old neighbours who have visited but have moved away. Also among the group is the boss lady, whose father founded "Yuen Hing Lung", started out as a street hawker joint, more than 60 years ago. The noodle shop therefore becomes the linkage among the friends and their friendship. The "Jazz, from the Ground Up" project will livestream its Episode 04 from "Yuen Hing Lung" this coming Monday on 20th June at 9:00pm. During our visit, by observing the many decorations and the handicrafts in the workshop, transformed by many of the volunteers there, we could feel what he meant by "unexpected outcomes that you had never imagined" and the playfulness of his approach. The "Cotton Candy Bike", shown in this video, made by the two founders along with volunteers, is one of the masterpieces representing such free spirit while being fully functional and a beauty to behold. The "Jazz, from the Ground Up" project will livestream its Episode 03 from "UpCycling Plus" this Sunday at 6:30pm. With the admirable ambition of reducing waste, Shui Gor's "thift shop" becomes a treasure-hunting space for Cheong Gor (previously introduced as the master craftsman from "UpCycling Plus" who collects discarded items for upcycling and repurposing). The "shop"'s variety of parts and goodies bring significant benefits to its local community - squatter dwellers who do not require anything exquisite but the affordable and functional. Nearby residents enjoy quality-of-life upgrades on the cheap by fishing adventurously from this pile of "junk"! Interestingly, as the used belongings are gathered from all over the city, the wide ranging styles and varieties of objects ending up at different homes in the squatter area ultimately create a visibly heterogeneous landscape.
