However, elections rarely go ideally, and strategic voting becomes necessary. We can't support those who won't realize our vision of an intersectional and feminist society. To ensure the rights of women and minorities to live freely and make their own decisions, it is necessary to dismantle systems of opression first. Tomorrow is #InternationalWomensDay . Conflicts are happening around the world in places like Palestine, Sudan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, North Africa (including the Maghreb), and Ukraine. While the triggers vary, they all root on systems of opression like colonialism. And don't we forget that under colonialism, minorities are the most affected. Approximately every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by a family member somewhere in the world. One in three women has experienced sexual violence. The majority of the world's impoverished are women, and in Japan, half of single-mother households face relative poverty. Violence takes various forms, not only physical but also mental, economic, and legal. However, a common thread is that women, especially trans women, and minorities are often the victims. Especilally transphobic hate and violence, particularly directed towards trans women, jeopardize the overall rights of women. This situation undermines the collective struggle for women's rights, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive efforts to combat all forms of gender-based violence. And tomorrow, August 15th, is the Memorial Day for the End of the War. Every year, the national memorial service for war dead is conducted, and discussions related to the end of the war are more prevalent on TV news. Amidst these discussions, the focus often falls on the “suffering” that Japan endured, but what about the “assault” that Japan committed? Both aspects, the suffering and the assault, are needed to be considered when talking about the past world war and aspiring for peace. In this post, the term "comfort women" is introduced with "". Internationally, comfort women are described as "sex slavery," and the term "comfort women" is generally used with " " because it is a euphemism that conceals the reality. This post follows this usage. (For more details, please see our previous post in 2020.) In this post, the spotlight is on the “comfort women” issue, but unfortunately, there were other inhumane actions committed by Japanese Imperial Army during the war. To prevent the recurrence of both suffering and assault, it's crucial for us to take the first step by learning about history. For instance, consider comments in news articles like "Wasn't this a setup?" or "Why didn't you fight back?" These types of remarks shift blame onto the victim or imply they are somehow responsible. It's been observed that victims subjected to this kind of second rape experience reduced resilience and a slower recovery process. Let's examine some examples of second rape that can intensify the suffering of sexual violence survivors and hinder their ability to seek further support. While the actual military use of atomic bombs was witnessed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the scope of the victims extends beyond these cities, encompassing nuclear test sites like New Mexico and the Philippines. Research indicates that the casualties resulting from atomic bomb drops exceed 250,000 people, and the fatalities related to U.S. testing surpass 200,000 people. In the context of World War II, various nations engaged in inhumane acts. The Holocaust in Germany, the Nanking Massacre in Japan, the atomic bombings in the United States... Both Axis and Allied powers have been held accountable for war crimes; no nation is exempt. So, who were the victims of these wars? Jewish individuals, women and girls of Nanking, ordinary citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki... In every conflict, the greatest impact is felt by civilians, particularly those who are socially vulnerable. Are you familiar with the poem “Ningen wo Kaese” (to Poems of the Bomb) by Mitsuyoshi Toge, who was an actual survivor of the August 6th bombing? Always, it is the civilian population, not the decision-makers of war, who suffer the most. Today, Japan stands as a democratic nation. Unlike during World War II, we have the capacity to raise voices against war. To avoid repeating past mistakes, shouldn’t we seek accountability and express our opposition to war?
