A woman immersed in the bliss of creation — giving birth to snakes, trees, eggs, buildings, fish, and humans. 🐍🌳🐣 This piece was inspired by Accouchement rose / Pink Birth (1964), a powerful work by my favorite artist, Niki de Saint Phalle. Looks like the patient was just exhausted— she only needed some encouragement from the snakes and a special energy pizza 🍕 for a full recovery. ❇️ Mystical (2018 )❇️ — part of the GOKURAKU / Paradise exhibition, currently on view at @gallerynucleus 🌟 I started sketching for this piece back in 2018 during a time when I was dealing with horrible anxiety. It took a long time to finish—but when I did, I felt like myself again.✨ Funny thing is, I don’t remember how this image came out of me. 🌸Gokuraku Onsen (Paradise Hot Spring) — part of the GOKURAKU/Paradise exhibition currently on view at @gallerynucleus 🌸 This piece was inspired by Japan’s fascinating subculture of elaborately decorated trucks, known as dekotora, which have been around since the 1970s. I recently began a dekotora-themed painting series, and this second piece is centered around onsen (hot springs). 💁🏻‍♀️Meanings of the words written on the truck: 湯 = hot water / hot bath / hot spring 温泉 = hot spring いい湯だな = “Ii you dana. (This hot bath feels so good)” — a line from a popular 1960s song about onsen (Playing on this post🎶) 極楽 (Gokuraku) = paradise 桜 = cherry blossom ゆ = the hiragana form of 湯 (hot water) ♨️ = the common “onsen mark” seen on maps and signs for public baths in Japan This piece is still looking for an owner! The opening of Gokuraku Paradise, a three-person show with Katsuya Terada @katsuyaterada and Rockin' Jelly Bean @rockinjellybean , is coming up next weekend at @gallerynucleus in Los Angeles! This exhibition has been in the works for many years—we’ve been discussing it every time I returned to Japan—and I’m so excited that it’s finally coming to life. Both Terada and Jelly Bean are legendary artists, widely known and respected. But they are also two of the very few senior artists who, back when I was still young and often dismissed as “that strange little girl” by older men in the industry, treated me with genuine respect, encouraged me, and praised my work. Due to some health issues earlier this year (I’m ok now!), I was only able to complete four new pieces—two acrylic paintings and two pencil drawings. To complement them, I’ve selected nine earlier works that fit the theme, for a total of thirteen pieces in the show. With different backgrounds, genders, ages, and influences, the three of us have each explored and expressed our own visions of paradise. All three of us will be attending the opening reception, so if you’re in the Los Angeles area, we would love for you to stop by and experience the artworks in person.
