The concept of the project is that non-material digital technology can turn nature into art without harming it. As the artworks in this exhibition are influenced by the trees and birds that live in the garden, if the wildlife disappear, the artworks will also disappear. The trees and birds cannot be separated from the ecosystem such as the garden’s forest or lake, so if the environment is not sustained, the trees and birds will cease to exist, and as a consequence, the artworks as well. The artworks’ existence is not defined by their physical surface boundaries, but is continuous and ambiguous with its surrounding environment. The artworks transform interactively, influenced by wind, rain, as well as by the behavior of the people in it, making the environment and the people a part of the works. Color in a creature on the paper provided, and see the picture you have drawn come to life and move in front of you. Living things eat and are eaten by other living things in one shared ecosystem. The creatures you draw will multiply if they eat other living things, but they will die and disappear if they do not eat enough, or if they are eaten by other creatures. The salamanders eat the snakes, the snakes eat the lizards, the lizards eat the frogs, and the frogs eat the butterflies, each one propagating as they consume. Likewise, the butterflies multiply in places where flowers grow. Although flowers will bloom if people stay still, their petals will scatter if people walk around and step on them. Salamanders will die if people step on them too much. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List is a database of the conservation status of biological species. Each sphere of light can be clearly perceived in the space as though the light is solidified, however, there is no material surface boundary. The perception of the boundary between the artwork and your body is ambiguous. When you broaden your vision, dark purple-blue spheres also begin to appear, as though darkness has been solidified. If you try to touch a sphere of light, the sphere shines brightly and the surrounding spheres respond one after the other. When Tea in Spontaneous Order shines brightly, the surrounding spheres also respond one after the other. Light does not solidify, and masses made entirely of light do not exist in the universe. In other words, these spheres of light only exist in your perception. The work cannot exist on its own - its existence is a phenomenon created by its environment. 夜の森のミュージアム「チームラボ幽谷隠田跡」、茨城県北茨城市・五浦（いづら）に、9月30日(月)オープン。夕暮れと共に、森に隠された谷の棚田跡が、アート空間に。チケット販売中。 Scheduled to Open on September 30 in Izura, Ibaraki. teamLab Night Forest Museum “teamLab: Hidden Traces of Rice Terraces” ・ In Izura, where the modern Japanese scholar and art critic Okakura Tenshin lived in his later years, there was a mountain along the coast that was difficult to enter. Coming out of the deep mountain forest there was a valley. There were remains of rain-fed rice terraces, now a marshland covered in reeds. They looked like secret rice terraces. Thinking about the long existence of nature and human activity continuing together, we decided to create artworks of the remains of the rice field terraces hidden in the forest. People can walk into the artwork, and even if they do so, the artwork will continue to be maintained, its existence unharmed. If a person touches the artwork, they realize that what they are looking at is ordinary water. The artwork’s existence is not independent, but is actually a unique phenomenon created by its environment. The places where the work appears will change as the viewer moves. The work’s appearance is unique to the viewer, so someone viewing the artwork from another angle will see a different colored work appearing in a different place. A year of seasonal flowers from the area bloom throughout an hour, continuously scattering and changing. Flowers are born, grow, bud, bloom, and eventually scatter, wither and disappear. The flowers are in a continuous cycle of life and death, repeating forever. Our own existence is part of this continuity of life and death, repeating endlessly, for an overwhelming length of time, for billions of years. However, it is difficult to perceive this in everyday life. The figures of the artwork walk endlessly while confronting new situations. Confronting new figures one after another, people also make choices along their own path. The artwork is not a pre-recorded image that is played back: it is created by a computer program that continuously renders the work in real time. A light blue ball represents water: when this ball hits the seeds, they sprout, bud, and blossom. When a yellow honey bee ball hits the flowers, they are pollinated, and the flowers become fruit.
