Since I’m a big fan of Studio Ghibli, many of them have been inspired by Ghibli films in recent years. And this year, I chose “My Neighbour Totoro”! It was quite challenging to capture the wonderful world of that film in this small space. Taking inspiration from the use of the rake-like Kumade to “gather in” fallen leaves, it has come to symbolise the bringing of good fortune, wealth, and other blessings. I wanted to have this popular Kumade as a New Year’s decoration, but unfortunately, it’s not available overseas. Therefore, I decided to making it using materials that are accessible abroad. The paper fans available at Daiso were perfect for this craft. The ingredients are just bi-carb soda (baking soda), corn flour (cornstarch), and warm water. Yes, that’s all! It’s so easy to make. The texture of this clay is very soft and squishy. (I love it!) So it’s highly recommended for sensory play with little children. This time, I tried making cute Christmas decorations using this clay. It was very similar to making cookies, and was so fun! All the kids love this beautiful craft, but for those who want to make it even easier, it’s perfectly fine to just put coloured water in the bottle. When you finish by sticking a label, any bottle will look like a potion. I use coffee to give the labels an antique look. I learned this technique from professional art staff when I was studying stage art at an art school. Brand new paper transforms into something vintage in an instant. It’s an idea that even young children can enjoy creating. This time, I coloured the paper doilies with crayons, but you can also use soft pastels or paints as substitutes. Feel free to use your preferred art supplies. Additionally, if you find colouring to be troublesome, you can skip the colouring step and use a paper doily in its pure white state! It will also be pretty. Whether you have a frame or not, it’s fine, but framing your artwork makes it looks even more beautiful. ✨It’s also a good idea to paint the frame in your favourite colour beforehand. For children, this craft can be a great opportunity to learn about recycling and SDGs. ✨ However, for young kids, using a hot glue or scissors might still be challenging, so please make sure that an adult helps them. And please let the children choose the fabrics and insert the hoop. By assigning some important tasks to the children, they can experience a sense of accomplishment.
