SATO He has made it a daily habit to paint “one piece a day” at home ever since he discovered watercolor painting at a summer camp when he was ten. Without a specific model in mind, he selects a combination of colors from his palette based on the images that come to him that day, filling large sheets of paper with fluid strokes reminiscent of jelly beans or raindrops. To keep the colors pure and vibrant, he prefers American-made transparent watercolors. At first, he simply arranged small circles on the page, but after he started using felt-tip pens, he began to see the whole composition and make thoughtful use of negative space. Now he skillfully uses paint and colored pencils to create highly design-oriented pieces. He feels a sense of reassurance when conversations are met with clear responses. That repetition of interaction forms a rhythm, which also finds its way into his creative process. Once he meets someone, he (rarely) forgets their name.
