These street shops have independent facades separated from the buildings and form a cityscape. However, the length of time the escalator moves up and down is a problem, and it is difficult to attract customers to the 3rd floor and above. Therefore, we proposed an experiential flow space with a polyhedral mirror. A Kaleidoscope-like Entrance Tube Memory of the site’s past has been maintained in the entrance tube leading visitors to upper floors. The tube is a great mirrored space, its mirrors recalling the mirror wall cladding of the Central Apartments, which once occupied the site (a building that came to symbolize Sixties and Seventies youth culture). To see fashionably costumed people reflected repetitively in the mirrors, like colorful objects in a kaleidoscope, is dazzling in effect. A special sense of excitement evocative of the fashion world is produced, and the ride on the escalator becomes a rich experience. Attracted by the mirrored reflections of people passing through the intersection, one peers into the tube. On riding up the escalator, a great atrium appears with tree-filtered light spilling down from a skylight in the ceiling. The project consists of a 36m by 6.8m new dining space and renovated kitchen-dining area. In between the ocean and mountain, the architecture opens up to both. The idea was to create a generous place with pleasing wind and open view like a gazebo in a garden with only a roof above the seating area. Half the space is surrounded by a glass fixture so one would feel as if dining outdoor. In order to avoid the space becoming dull, the roof structure needed to be warm and delicate. We decided to gently embrace people with bundled rafters made of red pine that is common in the region, hence accords with the concept of the restaurant, local production for local consumption. “One arrow can be broken easily, but not so if three were united as one.” The idea was preached by Mri Motonari, a prominent daimyo of the region, and we decided to reflect this regional story in the roof structure.Three kinds of rafters in size, 22.5 x 45mm, 45 x 45mm, and 22.5 x 60mm, are arranged at 450mm-pitch. The frame was constructed by the craftsmanship of the traditional furniture industry in the region, and with a total of approximately 1600 roof frames, a gentle and delicate structure was realized. The client desired a way of life similar to living in a cave as primitive people once did. Although a little surprised by this, I felt it might be interesting to return to the origins of architecture, and design a house. Since we could not turn an actual cave into a residence, we began the process by first hollowing out a large lump of clay with the client. Because the site was on a steep slope and posed the danger of landslides, we embedded a reinforced concrete structure down to the supporting layer of the soil. Next, we made the structure above int he shape of a round boulder that would parry the soil to the sides if by any chance the above cliff collapsed. In order to eliminate the salt damage and heat accumulation unique to reinforced concrete structures, we sprayed cement mixed with the local soil onto the exterior and covered the rooftop with seeds of wild plants, the roots of which would prevent the soil from being washed away. For the interior, we embedded coral and shells, which gave a fun process of excavation by scraping off the excess soil. The result is a space enveloped in soil with a feeling of security and mysterious darkness. A staircase goes deep down into the ground. What can be heard in the darkness are one’s own footsteps and breathing. The sounds instantly bounce back from above, below, left, and right. When you want support, you extend your arm to the coarse, damp wall surface. You would feel both a sense of security that comes from the isolation from the outside world, and fear of darkness. Cool air flows towards you as an invisible river. The darkness hints the beginning of all life forms, beyond which brings a sense of nostalgia of returning to one’s origin. The glass was produced using three-dimensional heat-shaping technology, by artisans who produce windshields for Shinkansen high-speed train cockpits. The resulting conference room has a lively mood, as if the heat of the discussion were inflating the room, balloon-like. The round, 4m-diameter table seating 16 people, like the round table of King Arthur’s knights, grants equal status to all personnel present. By giving the table a slight 8mm gradient toward its center, moreover, those attending naturally bend forward as they sit, a posture that motivates them to participate actively in the discussion. The retreat villa sits on top of a dune overlooking the beach. It is arranged along the undulating earth, with the living-dining-kitchen space and second-floor main guestroom placed at the highest point of the dune. The other rooms are placed along the slope like plants growing in the wild. In order to integrate this unique environment, we matched color and granularity of the grain used in washed plaster to those of the surrounding sand, and used it for the interior, terrace, and pool floors so that any sand tracked in would blend in. Inside the pool, we scattered smoothed sea glasses that were found along the shore. The structural frame was inspired by the logs used for sand fences along the beach, and opens up to the magnificent view of the ocean and mountain. The logs also serve to protect the building from salt damage and strong winds. Compared to square timber, which is made by cutting the fibers of the tree trunk, logs are sturdy and resistant to bending. Also, since the timber volume is generous, the members could be jointed without using metal fittings. However, more appealing feature lies in the fact that logs have qualities that cannot be controlled by the designer. This makes us to retrograde to primitive architecture, in contrast to architecture based on a blueprint that is complete from the start. This requires the technique of wild, which is to combine immediately available yet finely different materials in search for better result. This approach is also known as hikari-tsuke, a traditional Japanese fitting method that improvises joints by utilizing the difference in material shapes to enhance the strength of the joinery. We believe that this bricolage of the surrounding environment creates the ideal relationship between human and nature, by accepting the existence of nature that is beyond our control. Therefore, we revived the ginkgo in the same place as a hut of worship as if the leaves were spread out using the ginkgo as a structure. A 3m cantilever is realized using a ginkgo material with a minimum cross-sectional shape of 60 mm square as a conoid shell. To obtain privacy and tranquility in these surroundings, we placed a garden and optical glass faade on the street side of the house. The garden is visible from all rooms, and the serene soundless scenery of the passing cars and trams imparts richness to life in the house. Sunlight from the east, refracting through the glass, creates beautiful light patterns. Rain striking the water-basin skylight manifests water patterns on the entrance floor. Filtered light through the garden trees flickers on the living room floor, and a super lightweight curtain of sputter-coated metal dances in the wind. The two directions that make up the diamond-shaped grid point to the important directions for the god that this shrine enshrines.
