This exhibition was first proposed by Naoki Wada @naokiwada39, the central figure of “Tsuchitomo” @tuchitomotokyo and a ceramic artist based in Wakayama. The exhibition will feature homage works by artists who have been greatly inspired by Seisho Kuniyoshi, a ceramic artist from Okinawa. Actual works by Kuniyoshi will be exhibited alongside the homage works, through Wada's efforts. The main visual for the exhibition has been photographed in preparation for the opening, which will be in two and a half weeks. The works were gathered at Naoki Wada’s @naokiwada39 studio, and one of the participating artists, Ryo Azuma @azumaryo_desu, took the photographs. In October 2020, Takashi Murakami @takashipom encountered the works of Yuji Toma @yuji.toma4143 at a pottery exhibition by Tonoto. In May 2021, Murakami visited the “Tsuchitomo Group Exhibition”, which Toma was participating in. There, he talked with Toma in person, and met the other participants of Tsuchitomo such as Masaya Kondo @kondomasaya_, Naoki Wada @naokiwada39, and Ryuichi Haga @ryuichihaga. In June 2022, Murakami traveled to Okinawa for a two-person exhibition by Wada and Haga. There, he found out that Wada knew of Toma’s work through Seisho Kuniyoshi. This significant discovery marked Murakami’s first encounter with Kuniyoshi’s works. Part of this discussion was broadcasted in a 91-minute Instagram live stream from Murakami’s account on June 4, 2022. This two-day exhibition follows the “Tsuchitomo no Hakaba Exhibition” (August 2023) and “Tokyo Wild Clay Exhibition” (April 2024), also held at Kaikai Kiki Gallery. In the past, many of the girls depicted in her works were partial projections of the artist herself, but this time, she is more conscious that she is depicting other individuals, and has thought more about what the girls in each of her works are like. The motifs in the works include “gyarus” that Kuraya saw near the driving school she attended, and “couples” in the streets of Harajuku. These motifs seem to be at a distant from the viewer, as Kuraya had depicted them based on her own observation. The exhibition will run until August 31. Together, they have created a design that ensures the flowers can be beautifully distributed on the final day. In the gallery, there are nine flower boxes filled with Shoji’s cakes and fruits, as well as Azuma’s flowers. These boxes are arranged in a grid pattern similar to those used for “été” cakes, with flowers placed in them. Today, we will be handing out each of these boxes to the visitors. They will be placed in specially designed take-home bags, allowing you to take them home just like “été” cakes. At first, she found it difficult to find people willing to work for a young woman with no background, so she started by developing a cake by reservation only with her as the sole chef. Around 2015, she quietly started a restaurant, and the following year, her mango tart was featured on a TV program, which brought her a lot of attention. This led her to slow down the sales of the cake, and to start a full-fledged restaurant. Feeling the limitations of running the entire cake and restaurant business on her own, she set out to find people to hire. Shoji became an instructor at her alma mater, Komaba Gakuen High School, where she met the first staff she would ever hire. Later, when the restaurant moved to a new location in 2019, she hired a second staff member, and eventually hired a third staff when she created the “Fleurs d’été” cake store in 2021. As “été” grew in power, the number of staff supporting it also increased. Today, “été” has produced two graduates. In May 2024, she donated all the trophies she had received to her alma mater. In the midst of these challenges, she became the first Japanese woman to win the “Best Pastry Chef” award at “Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants”, and broke down the glass ceiling one after another, giving hope to the next generation. In 2021, she was awarded the BVLGARI AVRORA AWARDS, an award sponsored by BVLGARI that spotlights the achievements and lifestyles of women all around the world.
