I am truly grateful to Grichka for trusting me and offering me this role, especially considering my age and position. @grichkarootz @madrootz KRUMP continues to evolve and grow, and it was a real honor to be part of the judging panel. For me, KRUMP now embodies life itself. Joy and struggle, glory and failure, dreams and goals, growth and hardship, energy and power, anxiety and challenge, the pain of trying to connect—and the desire to move forward. All of it is inside KRUMP, and I absolutely love it. I believe that what matters most in KRUMP is connection and trust—just like in life. In Japanese, we call this “giri ninjo” (a balance between duty and humanity) and “suji” (sticking to your principles and following through with what you’ve decided). To me, that’s what life is all about. For the judge demo at ILLEST, I was inspired by the world-renowned film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and had two friends produce a buck track that sampled the iconic song of the same name by Ryuichi Sakamoto, a beloved Japanese composer. This song carries themes of war and peace, life and death. For me, it also represents my identity as a Japanese person and my connection to the world. At the age of 48, I think the reason I reflect so deeply through KRUMP is because of the state of the world over the past six years—and because I’ve been part of this culture for such a long time. My personal growth and decline, and the things I feel are clearly fading, have become more visible to me. That’s why I wanted to express a bit of Japan’s unique sensibility through this performance at the ILLEST World Championships. I created a backing track that sampled some of the most iconic songs from Japan—and I feel like I’ve left my mark on history. And I’m proud that someone like me, who can hardly speak English, was able to join the Madrootz crew.
