GALLERY TARGET is pleased to present “ALL RIGHT BITE”, a solo show by Ayako Rokkaku starting from April 5th. The year 2023 turned out to be a significant year for Rokkaku with multiple large-scale exhibitions. In May and August, there were museum exhibitions in Shanghai and Chengdu, and in September, a solo exhibition in Berlin. All of these exhibitions ended with great success, further expanding the scope of her activities in the future. Rokkaku is working on incorporating new color schemes for this exhibition. While retaining the fresh sensation akin to bathing in a shower of past colors, Rokkaku has created a series of artworks that induce a pleasant margin of error in the viewer's perception by consistently rearranging the colors of floating objects, life forms, and indivisible abstract and figurative forms. This exhibition, the first in seven years in Japan, we will showcase new canvas and cardboard works, as well as eight bronze sculptures exhibited at the LONG MUSEUM in Shanghai in 2023. Additionally, a catalogue featuring artworks exhibited in LONG MUSEUM will be released during this show. "SELF FULFILLING PROPHET SEES" by Stephen ESPO Powers Feb. 29th(Thur) - March 11th, 2024 GALLERY TARGET is very proud to presents 3rd solo show by Stephen ESPO Powers, exhibiting more than 50 new art works created here in Tokyo. Powers says: He is lucky to be living here, splitting his time between Manhattan and Jingumae. He has been visiting Tokyo for 24 years now, first with the mythic UNTITLED exhibition in 1999, then every few years thereafter. Every time he visited, he would get inspired by the graphic design and characters of Tokyo, and the influences infused his art. After all this time, he felt it was time to bring the influences back home. He landed like a raven with a bag of shiny ideas he has taken from Tokyo over the years. ESPO has been here only since June, opening ESPOKYO (2-32-10) and bust dealing with the business of being in business. He rides the train when he can, and has been visiting the junk shops of Tokyo, looking at the beautiful debris of the city. He’s not confident he has anything like a Japanese style in his very ESPO artwork, but Japanese Kanji and Katakana is slipping into his paintings. He feels he’s mostly useful by showing up at openings and just being present. It’s typical when you see a crow to expect him to fly away, but its unusual, and hopefully special, when the crow hangs out, pays rent, puts trash in the proper place, waits at the light, wears a mask on the train, says “sumimasen”. "A self-fulfilling prophecy is when you believe something good will happen, it happens. It works for bad things too, so be careful what you believe in. I am a Self Fulfilling Prophet because I believe in myself, and I believe in love. The rest will manifest, you’ll see." - ESPO During this exhibition, will be holding special events. This exhibition was planned with the goal of creating a unified worldview by bringing together five artists who are active in different fields and using different methods of expression to resonate with their works through the common language of SURFING. While riding a wave is an intuitive and sensual adventure, how does this adventure influence each individual piece? "SEARCHING" is a word thrown at both viewers and creators. Please enjoy this exhibition of new works created by five artists who came together to simultaneously hold a surfing camp, mural production, and group show in winter in Fukuoka. ※The opening event will be held at cassette on the first day. 2/2 (Fri) 5:00 pm-9:00 pm. Renowned for his use of a "collage of techniques," applying painting and printing methods and using canvases shaped in various forms, Koichi Yairi is celebrated for his artistry. Seemingly pop at first glance, his works possess a sense of tranquility and delicacy. Yairi weaves the entire exhibition space into a single original story, creating a unique exhibition method that evokes the audience's experience like reading a picture book. This approach has garnered attention in both domestic and international art and culture scenes. After achieving success with solo exhibitions in London, Seoul, Hong Kong, Fukuoka, and Tokyo, this exhibition represents the culmination of his career, providing a platform for exploring new forms of expression. The exhibition space is divided into two sections. One centers around his signature style, showcasing canvas works that serve as illustrations, enriching the imagery of narratives based on the artist's everyday life. In the other section, more complex and sophisticated large canvases are displayed, serving as an experiment to explore the potential of the artist's production method, distinguishing it from his previous narrative-based exhibitions by incorporating both printing and painting artworks. Through the exploration of process and technique, the previously melancholic collection of works has evolved into a delightful chaos.
