SAI presents "Koichi Yairi 24,♯1," the largest solo exhibition by the artist and graphic designer Koichi Yairi, in collaboration with GALLERY TARGET, from 27th January to 18th February, 2024. Renowned for his use of a "collage of techniques," applying painting and printing methods and using canvases shaped in various forms, Koichi Yairi is celebrated for his artistry. Seemingly pop at first glance, his works possess a sense of tranquility and delicacy. Yairi weaves the entire exhibition space into a single original story, creating a unique exhibition method that evokes the audience's experience like reading a picture book. This approach has garnered attention in both domestic and international art and culture scenes. After achieving success with solo exhibitions in London, Seoul, Hong Kong, Fukuoka, and Tokyo, this exhibition represents the culmination of his career, providing a platform for exploring new forms of expression. The exhibition space is divided into two sections. One centers around his signature style, showcasing canvas works that serve as illustrations, enriching the imagery of narratives based on the artist's everyday life. In the other section, more complex and sophisticated large canvases are displayed, serving as an experiment to explore the potential of the artist's production method, distinguishing it from his previous narrative-based exhibitions by incorporating both printing and painting artworks. Through the exploration of process and technique, the previously melancholic collection of works has evolved into a delightful chaos. Although it may initially appear contrary to the background, the elements capturing the subject of the contemporary world have surpassed the ordinary, allowing for an interpretation as non-representational art that questions the meaning of the paintings themselves. . GALLERY TARGET is pleased to announce the first solos exhibition by Jake Clark in Japan. Jake Clark was born in Melbourne, Australia, and currently resides in New York. Growing up seeing his aunt model for Andy Warhol’s work exposed him to pop art from an early age and he developed a close relationship with art and a natural curiosity for it. He had a passion for drawing, and as a teenager after encountering Keith Haring's subway art he switched from using pencils to spray paint. He also taught himself various skills like gardening and ceramics, incorporating the experiences gained from each into his own creations over time. Clark explores many mediums as a painter, sculptor, and ceramicist. His works depict images found in our surroundings, such as logos from companies, sports teams, restaurants, and road signs that are part of everyday culture. His creations, which combine three-dimensional and two-dimensional representations, possess a playful and rich depth that machines can never replicate. Corporate logos, crafted using the golden ratio as perfect emblems of mass-culture, become devoid of emotion when encountered consistently, however they do hold a sense of importance in our daily life. By recontextualizing the imagery on ceramic vessels, the symbols are elevated into the realm of fine art. Just as Andy Warhol defined his works using everyday images and Keith Haring playfully and boldly painted with vibrant colors, Jake Clark's reinterpretation in his three-dimensional artworks is imbued with playfulness and melancholy. Clark has shown in New York, Los Angeles, Dubai, Hong kong, and other cities around the world, and this exhibition will be his first show in Japan. The main focus of this exhibition is the oil paintings created by Jun Takahashi, founder of UNDERCOVER since 2013. Amidst his extremely busy work, he continued to paint on his own through self-study, becoming captivated by the freedom of expression that allowed him to choose motifs and complete the paintings by himself. The main subjects of these paintings are portraits of musicians and actors who have had a significant impact on his life. Through repeated practice, his skills steadily improved, and the accuracy in depicting the motifs increased. Paradoxically, he began to feel a sense of dissatisfaction. In the midst of this, he started working on a portrait of his admired musician. While he felt a sense of accomplishment in the finished piece, he was unsatisfied. He decided to redraw the eyes of the portrait, obscuring them, and upon revisiting the portrait later, he grasped the "something" he wasn't satisfied with. Originally just a hobby, these oil paintings were never meant for public presentation. However, after repeatedly experimenting with harmony, he finally arrived at this work. It contained an "eccentric beauty" he had consistently pursued throughout his career, which couldn't be felt in things that were perfect or complete. Having discovered fragments of his own aesthetic sensibility within the oil paintings, Takahashi continued to depict individuals who had influenced him. His oil paintings evolved into what became known as "eyeless portraits," unseen by anyone else. The subjects of his paintings, blurred as they appeared, were adorned with silk curtains on the frames themselves, and his latest series portrayed individuals who were either deliberately blurry or depicted the inner stories of the subjects. These works now seem to outline the artist's beautifully closed-off worldview.
