四天王に踏みつけられた邪鬼を独立させて、仏前を灯す役割を与えた。 龍燈鬼像は褌を着け、腕を組み体には龍が巻き、頭上に乗せた燈籠を上目使いで見上げ愛嬌のある表情。 玉眼の寄木造、顎には植毛痕がある。 元は天燈鬼像は朱色、龍燈鬼像は緑色の体色だが、現在は彩色がほぼ剥落している。 龍の背びれには動物の皮、ギザギザの形をした眉毛には銅板、そして目と牙には水晶が使われている。 法隆寺夢殿の本尊「救世観音」は、およそ1400年前に造立された、日本に現存する最古の木造彫刻のひとつで、精緻な細工の光背や宝冠、左右対称に広がる蕨手（わらびて）と呼ばれる巻毛と天衣（てんね）は、この像が正面から拝観されることを物語る。 本体、光背、反花座（かえりばなざ）と呼ばれる台座はいずれもクスノキ材で造られ、本体は、宝珠や台座蓮肉（れんにく）も含め1本の材から造られ た一木造である。 まず目立つのは、肩上に大きく弧を描く天衣と、腰から風にたわむように湾曲した垂下天衣である。腰前を渡る天衣も、前に張り出している。各天衣は二本の銅線を曲げ、それに紐をからげて土を付ける。塑像としての限界を超えた大きな危険を伴う造形である。そのため、現状ではその一部が脱落している。作者は構造的無理を承知の上で、この天衣をつくった。そして、この天衣によってこそ、像の威力が表現できた。この勢いが天衣の隅々にまで伝わり、あたかも像から突風が発生するような錯覚を与えることに成功した。 降三世明王は、五大明王の一尊で東方に配されており、 阿閦如来（あしゅく）が力を以って強情な人々を仏道へ入れるべく変化した姿だとも、大日如来の化身とも、インドの神であるシヴァ神を降臨して倒した明王ともされる。 『大日経』では大日如来が仏教に従わない大自在天（シヴァ神）と烏摩妃（ウマー）の元に降三世明王を派遣し、力ずくで改宗させたと説き、胎蔵界曼荼羅や金剛界曼荼羅共に降三世明王に関連する仏が描かれていることから、『大日経』や『金剛頂経』が成立した7世紀中期に仏教に取り込り込まれたと考えられる。
