Ojeikere’s “Hairstyles” series re-contextualizes the elaborate hairdos of Nigerian women as “everyday” works of art. Starting in the 1960s, Ojeikere pictured over 1,000 styles, captured across decades. Employing a consistent composition in which the hairstyle dominates the foreground against a neutral background, Ojeikere developed a rich typology and archival record of these “sculptures for a day” through which he saw reflected the diversity of traditions throughout Nigeria. The exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, May 1, with an artist’s reception from 6-8 PM 💫 Guariglia deploys watercolor, gouache, and ink on the surfaces of her works on paper, sensationalizing daily life in gestural forms and precise zones of pattern. Observing her surroundings with an earnest, anthropological eye, Guariglia animates fragments of memory into compositions of urban and collective space. In Guariglia’s practice, pattern is essential, taking center stage as both a universal method of adornment and a metaphor for the organizing principles that create beauty within a chaotic world. Patterns seen in nature, both visual and behavioral, arise from unconscious repetition and variation. For Guariglia, to Act Natural is to follow and study these, and to be guided by a social cue as intuitively as her paintings follow her hand. This approach to rendering is informed by the principles of calligraphic mark-making and the artist’s own experience painting signs and murals in her youth. Reconfiguring the simple, yet infinitely variable practice of lettering, Guariglia makes use of the same curves, diagonals, and straights that make up the symbols of language. In this way, painting becomes a coded form of communication, a method by which the artist articulates human truths with economy of line. Improvised in dancerly brushstrokes across each subtly irregular piece of paper, Guariglia drafts wordless poems on life in the city. “Act Natural” opens with an artist’s reception next week, on Thursday, May 1, with a reception from 6-8 PM! Don't miss this look into the cedar forests of Canada through elevated eyes- Johnson's prints glimmer, sparkle, and shift into a wild array of hues. The results show more than just what can be seen through the lens alone 📸 In her new series "Cedar Forest," Johnson moves her Manitoba, Canada-based practice geographically Westward to the cedar forests of British Columbia. Inspired by the myriad connections of root systems and mycelium networks seen in old forests, the artist intensifies her use of color and texture to illuminate the forms of cedar trees. In these forests, the oldest trees are known as “mother” trees, which communicate and share resources with those surrounding them. In "Cedar Forest," Johnson honors the potential of this non-human consciousness: the idea that there are unseen signals and intelligence between trees that exist underneath the sounds of the landscape. In our Viewing Room, works from Johnson's new series "Mountain" create a journey across Canada's frontier. In handmade frames reminiscent of boulders, clouds, and other natural forms, Johnson's friends traverse the peaks and valleys of Jasper National Park. Johnson's fondness for these memories is translated in shifts from black and white to color, and in the tracing of forms and people in oil paint over the surface of each intimately-scaled print. This year marks the ninth edition of the program, a collaborative effort which strengthens the connections between Dallas’ arts institutions and international galleries. Sory’s studio portraits capture the exuberant youth culture of Burkina Faso, and form an especially vital document of the period during which the small African nation gained independence from France. Sory opened his studio, Volta Photo, in 1960, the same year his country (then called Upper Volta) began its transition from remote colony to independent nation. The young woman who posed for the camera in “Belle de Jour” is remembered by Sory: “This young lady was from the Farkan neighbourhood. She must have been around 16 years old... Headscarves were really trendy at that time. A Preview Benefit will be held tonight, April 10, from 5-9 PM ✨ In "Untitled (Relief Painting)," Welch continues his use of mosaic as a site for material and conceptual collision, juxtaposing the histories and connotations of objects as readily as he does their forms and textures. In this work, the artist reactivates tropes of relief sculptures across history, which prevail in art traditions ranging from Renaissance-era Italy to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia. The central figure of the work is a woman, whose form is sculpted in three dimensions, extending out from the mosaic’s surface along with found ceramic vessels and chrome-plated clay. Welch incorporates digitally printed images alongside the objects they represent within the composition, creating a humorous dialogue between artifacts and their depictions across time. Candles recur through the work as a symbol of progress, alluding to illumination, warmth, and the Promethean introduction of fire, parallel to the emergence of the third dimension in Welch’s wall-based mosaic work. This materially cacophonous scene plays out within a similarly chaotic realm; at the work's upper right, a farmhouse signals tenderness and domesticity, while an inverted smiling face spirals out in the lower corner. A man with a candlestick and a winged cherub enter the field from the left, hailing the central woman in her sculptural and lustrous beauty. The flame illuminates her golden tendrils of hair, which spiral out into the field among glass tesserae, tiled blossoms, and ceramic shards. The surface is dotted with millefiori, tiny glass flowers that seem to bloom atop the mosaic's surface. This panoply of materials, processes, and references cohere as a sculptural wall work that functions both as a painting and an artifact. Born in Bangkok, Thailand, Linda Sormin moved to Canada with her family at the age of five. Sormin’s sculptures and site-responsive installations embody the vulnerable and fragmentary nature of her diasporic experience. Recent exhibitions include two large scale installations in “Ceramics in the Expanded Field: Sculpture, Performance and the Possibilities of Clay” at MASS MoCA; and “Hokusai: Inspiration and Influence” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her first solo museum exhibition will open in November 2025 at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. She holds a BA in English Literature from Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI; a Diploma in Craft and Design from Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada; and an MFA in Ceramic Art from Alfred University, Alfred, NY. Sormin lives and works in New York, NY. Presented in the gallery’s viewing room, this grouping of works acts as both an intimate timeline of this journey and a panoramic look at sweeping vistas of Canada’s West. The photographs in “Mountain” show a trip Johnson and friends embarked on into the wilds of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, more than five years ago. Johnson digitally manipulates these images and traces forms across them in oil paint, changing spectrum between black-and-white and color. These shifts allude to time’s passage, and the works flit between past and present to share in the artist’s fond memories and their resonances with viewers in the present. With a singular mission, #MarkusBrunetti documents Europe’s historic cathedrals, churches, monasteries, and synagogues in immaculate detail. With his partner, Betty Schoener, Brunetti travels the continent in a converted firetruck-turned-photo-lab. Through thousands of individual images, the two construct perfected, highly composite views of these holy facades. Santa Maria dei Miracoli is also known as the “marble church;” consecrated in 1489, its polychromatic marble facade is one of the finest examples of the early Venetian Renaissance. The church was originally built to house an icon of the Virgin Mary, renowned for enacting miracles, recoveries, and other blessings. One such miracle included the rescue of a Venetian woman who was brought back to perfect health after being attacked in a property dispute. Since 2005, Brunetti and Schoener have spent two decades traveling Europe and working ceaselessly to create these sublime renderings of some of humankind’s most remarkable achievements. The historic sites Brunetti captures have stood the test of time as the world around them changed over centuries, and are a testament to humankind’s artistry on a monumental scale. The artist’s own rigorous and passionate practice translates these accomplishments into modern images, preserving the work of architects and laborers of centuries past, and offering evidence of their glory to contemporary audiences the world over. The exhibition brings together eleven artworks by artists from five Arab countries, highlighting the ever-evolving nature of clay as a material and the human capacity for reinvention across civilizations and cultures. The works on view range from handcrafted works to robotically assisted designs, bridging tradition and futurity as seen through the lens of ceramic art. Said’s gravity-defying vessels bring together influences from multiple periods and pay homage to the design lineages of his home country of Egypt. Especially in the hand-carved designs that adorn the facades of his works, the artist recontextualizes the carved jug filters of ceramics from Egypt’s Fatimid Dynastic Era (ca. 900 CE). These include contemporary designs that take inspiration from the more recent histories of Islamic art and architecture.
