During last year’s holiday season, two magnificent festive trees, designed by Kengo Kuma @kkaa_official—the visionary behind both hotels—graced the lobbies of The #TokyoEDITIONToranomon, and The #TokyoEDITIONGinza. This project, conceived with sustainability at its core, was executed with the intention that, after the festive season, these two trees would be thoughtfully upcycled into bespoke furniture. In close collaboration with @karimoku_official, the materials from each tree were expertly transformed into one-of-a-kind pieces, blending Kengo Kuma’s visionary design with Karimoku’s craftsmanship. These pieces breathe new life into the materials, continuing to carry their message of sustainability for generations to come.　In the spirit of the holiday season’s cherished tradition of gift-giving, the proceeds from the furniture sale and auction will be generously donated to charity. At The #TokyoEDITIONToranomon and The #TokyoEDITIONGinza, the festive season takes a sustainable turn with two visionary trees designed by architect Kengo Kuma: "KOMOREBI - sunlight through leaves" at Toranomon and "KIGUMI - woven wood" at Ginza. Each tree is crafted from locally sourced wood, featuring multiple species native to Japan, nurturing the local forest ecosystem. But their story doesn’t end there—after their display, the materials will be transformed into furniture by Karimoku, ensuring the trees live on in new forms for years to come. In keeping with the season’s spirit of giving, proceeds from the furniture’s sale and auction will benefit Make-A-Wish Japan, granting wishes to children facing critical illnesses. Designed by #KengoKuma @kkaa_official and brought to life by #Karimoku @karimoku_official, this eco-conscious tree transforms our holiday tradition into a celebration of sustainability. “We designed Festive trees to enliven the lobbies of The #TokyoEDITIONToranomon and The #TokyoEDITIONGinza. Both trees were made by stacking small wooden units, each reflecting the unique character of the two neighborhoods. Each tree uses multiple tree species, contributing to the forest’s cycle and growth. After the season, the tree units are repurposed into furniture and reborn in new places. Toranomon—a youthful area constantly evolving with ongoing development. This festive season, world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma returns to #TokyoEDITIONToranomon and #TokyoEDITIONGinza with two striking, sustainable installations that reimagine the holiday tradition. Inspired by his signature designs for both properties, Kuma has crafted distinct interpretations of the festive tree, on display in each lobby beginning mid-November. Realized in collaboration with Japan’s premier furniture maker, Karimoku, these creations feature sustainably sourced Japanese timber—including oak, ash, magnolia, and maple. Following the season, the installations will be transformed into exclusive furniture pieces, available for purchase and silent auction to benefit charity.
