You could say about 90% of the route is now connected. For the first time, I truly felt that this line might be climbable. On my first attempt where I seriously started to think about the send yesterday, I stuck the move out of the pocket that had always felt like my weakness. But after passing the final rest, I fell on the crimp traverse. If I can get through that section, only the final push will remain— just that one move from the gaston. It looks like rain will continue for the next few days. As the new year begins, I’ve been training hard on limestone at Futagoyama and Gozeniwa, preparing for my Spain tour coming up in February. Last year, I spent a lot of time experimenting and searching for answers while chasing a big goal. But after going full circle, I’ve come back to something simple: trusting the body and abilities I was born with. Starting 2026 with a strong reminder of how important that really is. This year, I want to climb more freely and more like myself — keeping it rough, relaxed, and always with a happy base. Let’s go! I teamed up with @seanvillanuevaodriscoll , a Belgian big-wall climber, and we went in aiming to win. But the projects were too good to ignore, and before we knew it, we’d completely forgotten about the competition and kept trying until we could climb them. We didn’t make the podium—but maybe that’s how climbers are supposed to be. At least we gave everything in the final sprint to the finish tape. It was an amazing event—full of laughter and good times. Spending those days with Sean was a lot of fun. In front of the camera, he’s charismatic, almost like an actor. But once he stands in front of a route, his focus shifts completely. We shared a room, and both of us have a habit of meditating in the morning. Everyone has a different kind of presence, and his was calm and sharp. I can see why he loves big walls—he carries the kind of focus and energy that comes from the mountains. Glad to have met a great climber. It felt great to climb well again after so long. But it was rough on my Yosemite-worn slab body! After returning from Yosemite, without even catching my breath, I headed straight to @setouchijam on Shodoshima. Once again, so many people gathered—music, climbing, the outdoors, food— all sorts of cultures blended together, and I was lucky to spend such an amazing time there. After the event, I stayed for three more days to try the cave project. Finishing it will have to wait until next year. After that, I managed to send Ramune. Since the first ascent, some key holds have broken off, making the crux even harder, and now you can’t even clip properly. Honestly, it feels harder than the area’s 8c (“Tadaima, Shiokaze no Uranbana”), so I think it might deserve to be bumped up a grade. Maybe hard 8c. It always makes me fall even more in love with climbing and makes me want to come back again. I think it’s because El Capitan stands there—something far beyond human scale. When you’re here, you can’t help but feel how small we are. Looking at all the aid lines waiting to be freed, you realize this wall belongs to the future. And yet, it still welcomes us as we are and lets us experience true adventure. Humbled by its presence, I feel a connection with the people who gather here—something beyond words. Just one move. But I’ve been trying that single move in every possible way since my trip in June. On the final day of this trip, the cold, dry air gave me the best conditions I’ve ever had—yet I still wasn’t able to stick it, not even once. Out of 600 meters, it’s just one move. One missing piece. If I could have unlocked that, I would have earned the right to charge up this big wall. I wasn’t even allowed to stand at the starting line. The disappointment and a mix of emotions surged through me. But as they began to settle, what finally came into view was a simple truth: I want to climb a big wall with everything I’ve got. I want to come back here next spring. I’ll keep trying Pitch 2 of Lurking Fear, and I’ll look for a new challenge on El Cap while I’m at it. When the right moment comes, the key to Lurking Fear will turn. Since @yuji_hirayama_stonerider is my greatest mentor, I feel a strong pull toward doing it Ledge to Ledge. This style—linking from one ledge where you can take both hands off to the next—reflects his pure free-climbing philosophy of relying as little as possible on gear, transposed onto the walls of Yosemite. Back in 2002, when Yuji climbed the Salathé Ledge to Ledge, linking everything without using the hanging belays between the 5.13b, 5.13a, and 5.13b headwall pitches, it became iconic. On Lurking Fear, the belays on Pitch 4, Pitch 8, and Pitch 10 are all hanging—no ledges at all. Pitch 10 even has a long sling dangling down (at least it did in 2002 when Yuji attempted it), and you have to aid that final meter to reach the anchor. The anchor itself is placed in a way that splits the crux, making it hard to ignore. On November 12, the day before a storm rolled in, I tried linking Pitch 10 to 11. The exhausting 5.12a climbing of P10 flows straight into the stemming crux of P11 with no rest. The delicate smearing was brutal on my worn-out feet, and I fell. Then, weaving between breaks in the storm on the 15th, I went back up. On my second try of the day, I sent it! Probably around 5.13b–c. One step closer to a cleaner, more beautiful free ascent. Now only Pitch 2 remains! This place is truly mysterious. On the final day of my June tour, the one-day push on Lurking Fear was probably the most intense climbing experience of my life. Yet, standing at the edge of my limits felt strangely familiar—something deep inside me trembled with recognition. For the past five months, not a single day went by without thinking about Yosemite. Still, my emotions kept swinging. Why do I want to go back there? Do I want to drown again in that vast ocean of granite? And yet, El Capitan welcomed me once again—with a big smile (even though it rained on day one). My heart started racing. I wanted to stand on top again. That pure, primal motivation for climbing came rushing back. On the gloomy approach, with rain threatening to fall, I ran into @tommycaldwell and @alexhonnold . Even when the weather turns bad, the mindset of do what you can, no matter what is the same. Just like last time, I’m here to free climb Lurking Fear. The one-push free ascent is still a dream, so my goal this season is to redpoint each pitch. Last time, I couldn’t send pitches 2, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, and 19. The cruxes are pitches 2 and 7—on day three of this trip, I managed to redpoint pitch 7. Now I’ll focus on pitch 2 and the mid-wall 5.13s, and later go for another one-day push to finish the rest. Last day of our trip, I still haven’t RP pitch 2 and 7 but we decided to climb whole route. My partner @yuji_hirayama_stonerider gave me chances to lead. I could try onsight attempts from pitch 8 to the top which I’ve never tried. Wake up at 4:00 and left the ground at 6:15. We aid up until end of pitch 7 and started free climbing as possible as we can. I onsighted pitch 8, 9, 10, 14, 15 and 16. Free climbing on El Capitan/Lurking fear is way tougher than I expected!!! Strong sun, severe pain feet and hands, little water and food, pressure of time and endless hard pitches! I was totally exhausted after pitch 16 and Yuji started leading til top pitch 20. We arrived to the top at 21:30 in a dark. Only bright moon was watching us. Silence was there. My goal is to climb the whole route all free in a single push someday, but it looks like I still have a long way to go. Need to come back soon next season. Hey El Capitan, it’s too hard! Lurking Fear one day push✅ 今回の旅の最終日。まだ2ピッチ目と7ピッチ目はレッドポイントできてなかったけど、ルート全体を登った。 4:00に起きて、6:15にスタート。7ピッチ目まではスピード重視でエイド混じりで登る。8ピッチ目から上はパートナーが僕のオンサイトを譲ってくれたので、リードで突き進むことに。 8、9、10、14、15、16ピッチはオンサイトで登ることができた。 でもLurking Fearをフリーで登るのは想像以上に過酷だった。強烈な日差し、足と手の激痛、少ない水と食料、時間のプレッシャー、そして果てしないハードピッチ。 16ピッチ目が終わった時点で僕は完全に燃え尽きた。そこからはユウジがリードしてくれて、20ピッチ目の頂上までつないでくれた。頂上に着いたのは夜9時半。真っ暗な中で、ただ月だけが僕たちを照らしていた。静寂がそこにあった。 僕の目標は、Lurking Fearを全ピッチオールフリー、ワンプッシュで登り切ること。まだ、先は長いけど、頑張りたいと思います。 Hey El Capitan, it’s too hard! Lurking Fear has two crux, pitch 2nd and 7th. I solved all the moves and ready to RP pitch 7th. But need to work more on pitch 2nd. Pitch 2nd is a face climbing line with barely any holds, shifting back and forth between vertical and 87 degrees. There are still two sections where I haven’t solved the moves yet. Both of them involve big sideways dynos—my absolute weakness. But if I can figure out these two dynos, I’ll be much closer to freeing all the pitches of Lucking Fear. On days I’m not climbing big walls, I stroll around Camp 4 or tackle the famous Separate Reality. Mizugaki. From pitch one through six, the route allows no room for error. Yuji onsighted the first five pitches, but took a fall near the end of the crux on the sixth. Watching him climb felt like witnessing a film—he carried the spirit of his golden age in Yosemite. It was raw, honest climbing at the highest level. The other day, I reached out to Yuji and said, “Let’s go for a team onsight of Hayabusa!” He agreed immediately. Since I was the one to suggest it, I took the lead on the second pitch—graded 5.13a—but fell at the first cryptic crux. From there, we shifted our goal: to redpoint every pitch as a team. Both of us fell on the second and third pitches, quickly realizing just how high the bar was for a true onsight of Hayabusa. But as the day wore on, and with time running short, we both managed to send every pitch. It turned out to be a great climb. Now, a few days later, I find myself sitting with a mix of frustration and deep satisfaction. Multi-pitch onsighting draws out something primal—from both body and mind. It awakens a climbing instinct that feels alive and unfiltered. And already, I’m hungry for the next challenge. No matter how much you explore the world of climbing, it never feels like enough. Photos by Takemi Suzuki Hayabusa FA by Naoya Naito @arcteryx @arcteryx_jp @petzl_official @tenayaclimbing @tenayajapan @kemjapan @newhale_japan @newhale_climbing @carbongrip2025/05/31に公開- 指定なし4.84%1,53514Ogawayama day3 and day4 ペタシマン 5.14b RP 奇天烈 5.13c FA Petashiman 5.14b RP Kiteretsu 5.13c FA 3日目。初めてペタシマンを触ったのはコロナ禍以前だったと思う。中間部の核心が非常に厳しく、登りきれなかった。そして今シーズン、ゴールデンウィークに入る前に2日間トライしていたが、核心後に2度フォール。この日で5日目のトライ。 夕方の冷え込みを狙ってマラ岩へ。太陽が山に隠れ、一気に気温が下がり始め、トライ開始。核心部まで駆け上がり、一呼吸置いてから動き出す。核心を超えて5手ほど進んだところで足がスリップ。悔しいフォール。連日のクライミングで体力も指皮も限界だが、もう一度だけ挑戦した。マラ岩を軽快に一周して、身体を温めて再度トライ。核心後、3度も落ちているペタシセクションは、いつも以上に心のゆとりがあった。そしてついに完登！嬉しかった。これまで登ってきたスラブ課題の中では一番苦労したと思う。 4日目は、4峰にあるプロジェクトへ。いつ誰によって開拓されたのかも分からない公開プロジェクトたが、美しい前傾壁は登攀意欲をくすぐる。掃除を済ませ、2トライ目で完登。ルートチックな下部、石灰岩を思わせる激しい中間部、そして浅いポケットが散らばる最後のスラブと総合力が求められる素晴らしい一本。グレードは5.13cくらい？課題名は奇天烈。 Ogawayama Day 3 & 4 Petashiman 5.14b RP Kiteretsu 5.13c FA I think the first time I tried Petashiman was before the COVID era. The crux in the middle section was brutally hard and not being able to send. This season, I gave it two more solid days before Japanese holidays, falling twice just after the crux. So this is 5th day on the route. I headed to Mararock in the evening, hoping to catch the drop in temperature. As the sun disappeared behind the ridge, it cooled down quickly and I started my attempt. I rushed through to the crux, took a breath, and went for it. Five moves past the crux, my foot slipped. A heartbreaking fall. My skin and energy were both wearing thin—but I gave it one last go. Jogged a lap around the Mararock to warm up, and went again. This time, in the Petashi section (where I’d already fallen three times), I felt unusually calm. And finally… it went. So stoked! Probably the hardest slab I’ve ever done. Day 4: I headed to a long-standing open project on the 4th Peak. The steep, white wall stands out in Ogawayama, but nobody knows who bolted it or when. On my second try, I clipped the chains. The route starts with a technical lower section, turns into a powerful limestone-like middle, and finishes on a thin slab scattered with shallow pockets. It demanded everything I had. It is such an iconic piece with dynamic climbing style but nobody onsighted yet. (At least I’ve never heard about OS). Perched on the 5th peak of Yaneiwa, the proud arete and floating granite block can be seen clearly from the campground. I had always told myself I’d wait until I got used to granite climbing before giving it a try—and somehow, all this time had passed. We reached the crag around 3pm. The sun was blazing on the left arete, so I rested for a while, staring at the holds through binoculars and mentally rehearsing every possibility. Around 5pm, with the temperature dropping and a light breeze picking up, I started climbing. I placed two cams, then immediately hit a tricky section—awkward but manageable with some force. After catching my breath at the arete, I pushed into the crux: full-on compression moves, mostly deadpoints. Not knowing exactly where to go, I shouted with each lunge, trying to commit fully. About ten moves in, I hit a sloppy arete that felt nearly impossible to hold. I hesitated. A fall crossed my mind. Then I spotted a decent foothold, adjusted my balance, and looked up—there it was, a scooped hold. I launched. Surprisingly, it held. I wasn’t falling! I latched a jug. From there, I kept it together and topped out smoothly. On top of the rock, I listened to my heart pounding.
