What surfaced, I faced through meditation each morning, and sometimes at dusk. There, I met old feelings— waiting quietly to be healed. In those days, I saw myself struggling to gain something from the climb. And slowly, I felt— that I could already have it, right here, in this very moment. Maybe I had wanted it too much. So much that I feared receiving it. That’s why trying Sleeping Lion held both deep motivation and fear. But through those days, the fear began to fade. I was already fulfilled. And something unspoken began to exist between me and Sleeping Lion. When the day came, I already knew. There was nothing to fight. Everything that needed reconciliation was already at peace. Everything that needed to open was already open. If you’ve devoted yourself deeply to climbing, you might understand this. Sometimes I sit in stillness, sometimes I move, sometimes I dance. And all this time, I’ve wondered— can climbing become meditation? So far, it hasn’t. To me, meditation comes after an intense climb ends. In that state, all purpose dissolves. Even the reason to climb disappears. Climbing and meditation, happening at once— It’s still a place I haven’t reached. ⸻ And yet, when I meet a big project, something like love begins to move in me. Maybe you know this feeling. At first, I’m drawn in— by its beauty, its movement, its possibility. Then the mind starts to dream. Hidden desires begin to surface, projected onto the climb: to prove myself, to change who I am, to feel my worth, to declare my style to the world. Some see it. Some don’t. We climb to gain something. But the stronger the desire, the heavier the fall. In the moment of failure, the mind understands everything— and reacts with anger, frustration, or grief. ⸻ But through Sleeping Lion, I began to see something clearly: To face a project is to face yourself. Heading into the 2025 spring season, I felt a clear lack of power and endurance. I spent most of my time in the gym—fitness training, lead climbing, long routes, and bouldering. My weight increased by about 2.5 kg, and I was climbing better than ever. But when I tried Sleeping Lion, it was different. Yes, I had more power—but after 20 hard moves, I would fall. I couldn’t adapt to the rock. It felt like I was being pushed away. Trying to control instability with strength only made me pump faster. My body felt far from what Sleeping Lion demanded. After returning to Japan, I completely changed my training. I stopped all fitness training. Instead, I focused on movement—developmental patterns, relaxation, and focus through my fingertips and toes. Climbing almost like traditional Japanese martial arts. I trained in the gym three times a week, and went outdoors once or twice a week—climbing four routes of 8c or harder each session. I did almost no endurance training in the gyms. Every training felt like an attempt on Sleeping Lion. This wasn’t practice—the ultimate challenge. February 2026. When I returned to Sleeping Lion, I immediately felt the change. The limestone felt like it was sticking to my body. I was sharper, more sensitive. I wasn’t stronger than in 2025. You could say about 90% of the route is now connected. For the first time, I truly felt that this line might be climbable. On my first attempt where I seriously started to think about the send yesterday, I stuck the move out of the pocket that had always felt like my weakness. But after passing the final rest, I fell on the crimp traverse. If I can get through that section, only the final push will remain— just that one move from the gaston. It looks like rain will continue for the next few days. As the new year begins, I’ve been training hard on limestone at Futagoyama and Gozeniwa, preparing for my Spain tour coming up in February. Last year, I spent a lot of time experimenting and searching for answers while chasing a big goal. But after going full circle, I’ve come back to something simple: trusting the body and abilities I was born with. Starting 2026 with a strong reminder of how important that really is. This year, I want to climb more freely and more like myself — keeping it rough, relaxed, and always with a happy base. Let’s go! I teamed up with @seanvillanuevaodriscoll , a Belgian big-wall climber, and we went in aiming to win. But the projects were too good to ignore, and before we knew it, we’d completely forgotten about the competition and kept trying until we could climb them. We didn’t make the podium—but maybe that’s how climbers are supposed to be. At least we gave everything in the final sprint to the finish tape. It was an amazing event—full of laughter and good times. Spending those days with Sean was a lot of fun. In front of the camera, he’s charismatic, almost like an actor. But once he stands in front of a route, his focus shifts completely. We shared a room, and both of us have a habit of meditating in the morning. Everyone has a different kind of presence, and his was calm and sharp. I can see why he loves big walls—he carries the kind of focus and energy that comes from the mountains. Glad to have met a great climber. It felt great to climb well again after so long. But it was rough on my Yosemite-worn slab body! After returning from Yosemite, without even catching my breath, I headed straight to @setouchijam on Shodoshima. Once again, so many people gathered—music, climbing, the outdoors, food— all sorts of cultures blended together, and I was lucky to spend such an amazing time there. After the event, I stayed for three more days to try the cave project. Finishing it will have to wait until next year. After that, I managed to send Ramune. Since the first ascent, some key holds have broken off, making the crux even harder, and now you can’t even clip properly. Honestly, it feels harder than the area’s 8c (“Tadaima, Shiokaze no Uranbana”), so I think it might deserve to be bumped up a grade. Maybe hard 8c. It always makes me fall even more in love with climbing and makes me want to come back again. I think it’s because El Capitan stands there—something far beyond human scale. When you’re here, you can’t help but feel how small we are. Looking at all the aid lines waiting to be freed, you realize this wall belongs to the future. And yet, it still welcomes us as we are and lets us experience true adventure. Humbled by its presence, I feel a connection with the people who gather here—something beyond words. Thank you, Yosemite, for another incredible tour. I’ll be back again next year. Just one move. But I’ve been trying that single move in every possible way since my trip in June. On the final day of this trip, the cold, dry air gave me the best conditions I’ve ever had—yet I still wasn’t able to stick it, not even once. Out of 600 meters, it’s just one move. One missing piece. If I could have unlocked that, I would have earned the right to charge up this big wall. I wasn’t even allowed to stand at the starting line. The disappointment and a mix of emotions surged through me. But as they began to settle, what finally came into view was a simple truth: I want to climb a big wall with everything I’ve got. I want to come back here next spring. I’ll keep trying Pitch 2 of Lurking Fear, and I’ll look for a new challenge on El Cap while I’m at it. When the right moment comes, the key to Lurking Fear will turn. Since @yuji_hirayama_stonerider is my greatest mentor, I feel a strong pull toward doing it Ledge to Ledge. This style—linking from one ledge where you can take both hands off to the next—reflects his pure free-climbing philosophy of relying as little as possible on gear, transposed onto the walls of Yosemite. Back in 2002, when Yuji climbed the Salathé Ledge to Ledge, linking everything without using the hanging belays between the 5.13b, 5.13a, and 5.13b headwall pitches, it became iconic. On Lurking Fear, the belays on Pitch 4, Pitch 8, and Pitch 10 are all hanging—no ledges at all. Pitch 10 even has a long sling dangling down (at least it did in 2002 when Yuji attempted it), and you have to aid that final meter to reach the anchor. The anchor itself is placed in a way that splits the crux, making it hard to ignore. On November 12, the day before a storm rolled in, I tried linking Pitch 10 to 11. The exhausting 5.12a climbing of P10 flows straight into the stemming crux of P11 with no rest. The delicate smearing was brutal on my worn-out feet, and I fell. Then, weaving between breaks in the storm on the 15th, I went back up. On my second try of the day, I sent it! Probably around 5.13b–c. One step closer to a cleaner, more beautiful free ascent. Now only Pitch 2 remains! This place is truly mysterious. On the final day of my June tour, the one-day push on Lurking Fear was probably the most intense climbing experience of my life. Yet, standing at the edge of my limits felt strangely familiar—something deep inside me trembled with recognition. For the past five months, not a single day went by without thinking about Yosemite. Still, my emotions kept swinging. Why do I want to go back there? Do I want to drown again in that vast ocean of granite? And yet, El Capitan welcomed me once again—with a big smile (even though it rained on day one). My heart started racing. I wanted to stand on top again. That pure, primal motivation for climbing came rushing back. On the gloomy approach, with rain threatening to fall, I ran into @tommycaldwell and @alexhonnold . Even when the weather turns bad, the mindset of do what you can, no matter what is the same. Just like last time, I’m here to free climb Lurking Fear. The one-push free ascent is still a dream, so my goal this season is to redpoint each pitch. Last time, I couldn’t send pitches 2, 7, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18, and 19. The cruxes are pitches 2 and 7—on day three of this trip, I managed to redpoint pitch 7. Now I’ll focus on pitch 2 and the mid-wall 5.13s, and later go for another one-day push to finish the rest. We’d wake up early to climb El Cap, cool off by jumping into the river, drink cold beers, share delicious meals, talk late into the night, and then crash. Every day, new climbers would gather, creating this amazing, lively community. I’m truly grateful to have been welcomed into that crew.
