For this exhibition, Shoko Nakazawa is preparing new polystone works of her original character Byron, each painted with custom designs. This marks the debut of this new series. Five Byron figures will be presented in total: three vividly painted in Nakazawa’s signature color palette and brushstrokes, and two monochrome versions in black and white, which were highly requested at previous exhibitions and on social media. Additionally, Nakazawa will be doing a live painting session on a size 100 canvas during the fair. The fair will open with a preview starting May 8. The artist will be working on a large size 100 canvas (approximately 162x130cm). The centerpiece of her work will be “Byron the Giant Japanese Salamander Monster,” a character she created in 2014. Byron has garnered many fans in the form of sofubi (soft vinyl) figures, and was first depicted in her oil paintings in 2021. Since then, it has even appeared as a three-dimensional sculpture—making it an iconic character. “For the live painting, I want to complete a cute and pop-style oil painting featuring my main character, Kaijū Byron, amidst various motifs that represent the goodness of Japan.
