Festival season has kicked off in Japan. (English below) @owndays_jp の新しい虎ノ門店で、今週金曜のグランドオープン前にメガネを新調しました！👓✨ 素敵なデザインがありすぎて、選びに少し時間がかかりましたが、スタッフの方が素早く視力チェック＆処方をしてくれて、あっという間に完成。スタジオに戻ってさっそく、このメガネをかけた自分をスケッチして見ました。🎨✍️ I picked up a new pair of glasses at @owndays_jp’s new Toranomon store before their official opening this Friday. 👓✨ Choosing a design took me a while, but once I did, the staff gave me a quick eye check and an even faster prescription. I had the privilege of watching and drawing Colossus, a staggeringly epic dance performance, by @stephanielakecompany as part of @spaf_in_seoul festival at @arko_theater The rehearsal and final performance I saw were so moving - if only my penmanship was as dexterous, impressive and affecting as the movement of these incredible performers. Drat. Still, I am looking forward to seeing more performances again - fingers crossed there will also be a show in Japan one day. Thank you @stephlake @cyber_brat_ @vix_fairy_ and @nayekimmovement for having me along. And a big shout out to the dancers from Sungkyunkwan University who hailed from contemporary, ballet and classical Korean dance streams to put this together. I made 10 illustrations for this month’s @anan_mag , the Sex Issue, including some portraits of YouTuber Ichika Takimoto, manga author Chiaki Matsumoto and comedian Nishida. Here’s a little preview of some of the drawings. An An Magazine has been published weekly since 1970 and its Sex Issue is one of the most widely read in Japan (🤭). 今日は中目黒のスターバックスリザーブロースタリーが5周年を迎えました。6年前、カフェでのスケッチから始まり、6か月で大規模なプロジェクトになり、このプロジェクトで私のキャリアの中でのハイライトです。 Today marks the 5th Anniversary of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Nakameguro. Back in 2018 I was sketching in a nearby cafe, and one of the partners involved in the project approached me, literally tapping me on the shoulder. They asked if I could replicate the same artwork in my sketchbook but on a larger scale. Six months after that encounter, I found myself climbing scaffolding, drawing a five-story mural by hand while also producing five isometric drawings of the Roastery – before the building itself had been completed at beginning of 2019. This was also alongside my regular illustration work, including editorial illustrations and collaborations, not to mention an influencer trip and a live drawing event in Fukuyama — all undertaken without agent representation, or artwork assistance and completed within a month. 💪 Of course, Starbucks’ projects are made fascinating and enjoyable by the people who work there and I am thankful for all the partners support and encouragement. ☕️🫶 It wouldn’t have been possible without such a great group of people cheering me. 5 years on, I am happy to look back on this moment as a career highlight during my time here in Tokyo. #starbucks #starbucksreserveroasterytokyo #starbuckscoffee #starbucksjapan #スターバックス #スターバックスコーヒー @starbucksreserve_tokyo 📷 @brianscottpeterson

(日本語は以下です) When I draw on the subway, the people who catch my eye are the ones engaged in some activity. These days, most passengers are occupied with their phones. The best results, I think, come when you draw with intention. Such as by imagining a story. For example, this salaryman, dressed in a well-worn, crumpled suit, probably slightly fatigued, is engrossed in responding to an email.
