西山さんは東京在住のイラストレーターです。書籍や雑誌、広告やウェブなどのイラストを手掛け、オリジナルの作品も制作し、定期的に展覧会に出展しています。今まで様々な賞を受賞しており、2023年には 「LUMINE meets ART AWARD-オーディエンス・アワード-」のグランプリを受賞するなど、その活躍は多岐に渡ります。西山さんの作品を見て、「見たことある！」と感じた方も多いのではないでしょうか。 そんな西山さんは2010年からFREITAGを愛用しているとのことで、今回は自宅兼アトリエにお邪魔しました。居住スペースと絵を描くための作業場に敷き詰められたお気に入りの家具や作品の数々。そんななか、FREITAGのアイテムも「お気に入り」として部屋のいたるところに飾られていました。 「FREITAGを知ったのは、絵を学ぶために上京したころ。東京に住み始めると、FREITAGを使っている人をよく見かけたんです。汚れていたり、鮮やかだったりするトラックの幌。そして、黒に白文字で書かれた FREITAG の無骨なロゴ。すべてが自分の好みでした。2010年、ワタリウム美術館ミュージアムショップで初のバッグを購入しました。それは小さくて、斜め掛けができるバッグでした。当時とても嬉しく、ライブへ行く時なんかによく持ち出していましたね。社会人になってからは、ライフスタイルに合わせて、少しずつFREITAGのアイテムが増えていきました。」 西山さんがよく使うバッグは、F52 MIAMI VICE。FREITAGの中で最もシンプルなショッパートートを、仕事で打ち合わせに出かけるときや買い物に行くときに持ち出すそうです。また作業場を覗くと、デスクの上にもたくさんのFREITAGのアイテムたちが。 「コロナ禍では外出が減り、バッグを使う機会も減ってしまって。それでも、どうしてもFREITAGを使いたくて。机上のFREITAGとして F05 BLAIRをたくさん持っています。ピルケースや、携帯して持ち運べるゲーム機やそのカセットなどを収納して使っています。F06 SERENA はメインのお財布として。」 FREITAGはすっかり西山さんのライフスタイルに馴染んでいるようですが、イラストレーターという職業において、FREITAGから影響を受けることはあるのでしょうか。 「影響は強く受けていると思いますよ笑。FREITAGは元々、広告のためにデザインされたトラックの幌を再利用、カットすることで、そのグラフィックや図形が製品に活きていますよね。偶然性を活かすことで、色やグラフィックなどの製品としての佇まいが有機的に作用していると思います。僕の絵の制作では、何気ない日常を絵画的に捉え、そこにある色や形を再構築するところから始まります。 日常で何気なくやっている行為や見慣れた情景を、絵でいかにして再認識させられるか。色と形を通して対象の意外な表情を探っていきます。あえて線を曲げてみたり、色を足したり、減らしたり。FREITAGの製品は、そういったバランスがとても心地よい。物事の価値の再認識・再解釈という点は、自分が大切にしている感覚に似ていると思います。」 元々捨てられる運命だった素材を使い、製品として全く新しい価値を与えるFREITAGの再文脈化という考え。 "図像を描く"というイラストレーターとしての西山さんにとっても、描いているモノの趣を再解釈するという意味で、FREITAGと通ずる指針がありました。 そんな西山さんは今後、5月下旬に原宿のHB GALLERYで個展を予定しています。ミニマルなのに刺激的で好奇心をくすぐられる西山さんの作品を、ぜひ一度ご覧になってみてください。 - バッグの生地はリサイクルナイロン、ハンドルはリンゴの皮を原料としたヴィーガンレザーを使用しており、環境負荷の低い素材で製作されております。 生地の色や質感、ハンドルのカラーリングもチョイスさせていただきました。 イラストレーションのプリントもシルクスクリーンプリントで理想の色が出たと思いますし、縫製のステッチの位置もこだわって作っていただきました。 本日から先行予約販売スタートです。 tote bag in collaboration with Hunting World. This is a project in which a portion of the proceeds from product sales will be donated to conservation efforts for the endangered Bornean elephant. The bag's fabric is recycled nylon, and the handle is made of vegan leather made from apple peel, making it a material that has a low environmental impact. I also chose the color and texture of the fabric, as well as the coloring of the handle. I think the illustrations were printed using silk screen printing to achieve the ideal colors, and they were also very particular about the positioning of the stitches. Pre-order sales have started. If you pre-order a large size tote bag, you will receive a mini pouch with the same pattern as a gift.
