In their works, the participating artists reflect on themes such as identity, sexuality, and society. The video “The Headless Woman or the Belly Dance” by Nil Yalter, who grew up in Cairo and Istanbul and later lived in Paris, is exemplary for this debate. In her feminist self-portrait from 1974, Yalter addresses the repressive treatment of female sexuality in a unique way. The photographic self-portraits by Chinese artist Lin Zhipeng aka No.223 were created more than 40 years later. With his open and unfiltered approach, he captures moments of spontaneity and vulnerability and allows us as viewers to experience his person directly. The Austrian filmmaker and artist Friedl Kubelka vom Gröller breaks with social norms in a different way. Since the 1970s, she has been documenting the process of her own ageing and allowing us a very intimate insight into her own transience. In her photographs, Berlin artist Christa Mayer explores the interference of identity and social expectations. The self-portraits, taken at different stages of life, show the various facets of the exploration of the ego and allow the viewer remarkable insights into this process. The conceptual works by Düsseldorf-based artist Helmut Schweizer from the series “Handlungen” (Actions), created in 1971, are convincing and touching through an unusual simultaneity of rigor and portrayed vulnerability.
