Through this project, SKWAT seeks to challenge existing institutional boundaries by attempting to formulate alternatives that complement and expand existing institutional domains. The P space intends to be an informal addition to the ongoing Jean Prouvé exhibition, where visitors are allowed to actually experience Prouvé’s works and his vision outside the conventional context of museums and galleries. During the opening of the P space, twelvebooks’ warehouse will operate as usual. Small modifications of objects and spaces, living up to the DIY spirit. Take subway stations as an example. Rain leaks occur there frequently. The "countermeasures" that the station staff responds with are unique. They are spontaneous, temporarily and sometimes radical interventions. Extensive tube constructions, attached to the wall with tape, leading to a PET bottle, a bucket etc. Maybe the small flower pot garden in front of a house has caught your attention whilst walking around town. The list of examples of such informal alterations, initiated by citizens to improve everyday life with the materials they have at hand is endless. Using this kind of artistic expression, the city is modified from an expression of space to the self-expression of society. Creativity is not exclusive. It’s open to everyone, anywhere. Based on an ongoing research by SKWAT member @yamaguchi_irene ,we coined these urban alterations as "Shin Mingei" and started to jointly collect and research this subject. Incorporating his photos that document The Tokyo Toilets' transformation, SKWAT created a site-specific art installation in the most overlooked urban space within the city of Milan: A public toilet inside the Milan metro station. Focussing on what already exists, the photographs are stuck on top of the old bathroom tiles, respecting the history of the space and proposing new perspectives through addition. The red colour dominating the installation is intended to redefine the existing values and elements found on site. To share the unique toilet user experience from Tokyo, the latest TOTO toilet washlet models—similar to the ones used in Tokyo—are installed inside this Duomo Station toilet. Hoping to have a lasting impact on the public infrastructure of the city of Milan, the toilets will be donated and kept in place after the end of the Salone. On display is the original uniform of The Tokyo Toilet cleaning team, designed by NIGO ®, alongside cleaning tools and products from Japan, and the special toilet paper created with DAIDO MORIYAMA’s Tokyo Toilet photo series. These sculptures are installed in ways to resemble the typical narrow alleys of Tokyo and provide an extensive introduction to all The Tokyo Toilets that have been built so far, including a 3D experience by ARCHI HATCH. Sharing a similar vision with Triennale Milano, we would like to jointly examine more innovative ways of thinking and create a platform for the exchange of different cultures in a single place. To change the stigma attached to public restrooms, The Tokyo Toilet project invited 16 renowned creators to redesign 17 public toilets around Shibuya. Transforming these hidden sanitary facilities into alternative art spaces, had a remarkable impact on the everyday lives of Tokyoites. For the Salone, SKWAT—an artist collective from Tokyo—teams up with Japanese artist DAIDO MORIYAMA and graphic designer Satoshi Machiguchi, to introduce The Tokyo Toilet to Milan. Part of the temporary art installation inside a public toilet and two other venues throughout the city of Milan, is DAIDO MORIYAMA's most recent photo series, which documents the toilets' transformation in Tokyo. Another element of the installation is a special toilet paper and photobook that uses his photos and will be handed out to visitors. Hoping to have a lasting impact on the public infrastructure of the city, the latest TOTO toilet models got installed inside a designated metro station toilet. Apr 9 - May 15 CIBONE @cibone_tokyo SKWAT/twelvebooksは、CIBONEのストア内にてテナントの抜けた場を、次のテナントが入るまでの約一ヶ月間、仮設的空間を作り出しそれを一般に解放していく。空間を創出するにあたって、どんな場に対しても固有性と継続性の的確な導きこそが、持続可能な場の在り方のための最善な手段であり、それをこの場でも実践していく。 積読（つんどく）とは、本を買って未読で積み上げることの楽しさを表した言葉である。後に読むことを意図したものだが、時には一度も読まないこともある。 ただこの用語に否定的な意味は一切なく、積まれることで知らず知らずのうちにそこに本の彫刻が出来上がり、それは時としてサイドテーブルに姿を変えたりもする。むしろ読まれるという単一な行為を超え、複数の機能を含んだ喜ばしい存在とも云える。 SKWAT/twelvebooksは今回、販売方法が定まらず未だ流通に乗せていなかった「積読」していた貴重な書籍たちを、この場に持ち込み一般に解放していく。その書籍たちは古書から新書まで様々だが、どれもこの限定された期間、そしてこの場に相応しいタイトル・価格設定に厳選され販売されている。 ぜひこの書籍の山たちを無作為に探ってみて欲しい。そこにはこれまで埋もれていて気がつかなかった素敵な再発見が必ず待っているから。 - Starting today, SKWAT and twelvebooks, created a transitory space that recently opened up at CIBONE. Our intervention there, will solely remain until the next tenant moves in. We believe in the adaptability of each space and that its continuous use, is the best measure of sustainability. Tsundoku, which means reading pile, describes the pleasure of buying books and piling them up unread. With the intent to read them later - or never. The term carries no negative connotation. Creating piles around the house that form bookscapes, oddly shaped book sculptures or turn into your incidental new side table is rather regarded as something deliahtful. Pull out a book - lust to read a couple of pages, or find a reference - and put it back, to be soon covered by another book and possibly rediscovered again. This time, SKWAT and twelvebooks will take their own tsundoku piles to CIBONE. The piles contain single copies only, many of them usually not for sale and solely available for this limited period. 「a participatory city」 建設途中のビルや施設など、工事中の現場には常に仮囲いがされ、中で何が起きているのかは分からない。そして完成した途端、それらは突如姿を現すのだ。 おそらくそれはみんなの日常の中で頻繁に起こっている事柄なのだが、あまりにもその囲いの中の世界と距離が有りすぎて、その期間は街との繋がりを完全に閉ざしてしまっている。 私たちが毎日目にするその光景が、もっと自分たちの日常との距離を縮めてくれる豊かな存在だったらどんなに素晴らしいだろうか。 例えば、仮囲いというものが透明になり中で起こっているプロセスが一般に解放されたり、囲いのフェンス自体に私たちにとって心の踊るインタラクションが存在していたらどうだろうか。 工事期間自体が、みんなの日常に小さな喜びを与えてくれるポジティブなものに変わるかもしれない。 happens behind closed doors and you are hindered from catching a glimpse on what’s happening? And all of a sudden you face a brand new shop or an entire new building complex. It happens right next to your own home, your immediate neighborhood or around places close to work and still: Every single time is a big surprise and makes you feel detached from what’s going on around you. We believe that it is a more natural, organic way of building if you include the neighborhood, people who walk past every day by letting everyone see, follow and understand the progress of the construction. That’s why we - as a first step - removed the construction site panels for this project.
