This time, the featured motif is the "utsubokazura" (pitcher plant). Transforming this vessel traditionally used as a hibachi (brazier) into a flower vessel with a new purpose. Adorning the vessel, which is flat with a wide mouth, are original patterns of utsubokazura vines sprawling in all directions, like a natural design element. The pitcher plant, known for its distinctive pitcher-shaped carnivorous traps, has been crossbred in various parts of the world, creating unique plants that symbolize modern times. Along with the rarely seen flowers of the pitcher plant, the vessel is depicted rhythmically, as if swimming across the entire piece. The upper and lower bands of the flower vessel are adorned with arabesque patterns that symbolize strong growth, prosperity, and longevity. Within these patterns are two types of animals depicted: bats and the taotie motif. Bats, considered auspicious since ancient times, and the taotie, an imaginary beast face from ancient Chinese decorative patterns. The taotie is believed to protect against malevolent spirits and is often featured on vessels and architecture as a guardian deity. Together with traditional auspicious patterns that have been depicted since ancient times, the pitcher plant exudes a sense of lively movement as if it could come to life at any moment. Azuma Makoto, an expert in the expression of flowers, has started this project to once again focus on the essential value of “flower vessels” from the perspectives of both flowers and vessels, infusing them with contemporary sensibilities to rediscover their value and pose questions to the world. For this project, we have partnered with Tsuji Hitachi, the 15th master of Tsuji House, a renowned porcelain kiln in Arita with a 360 year history. The kiln was royally warranted to create porcelain for the royal family and has been producing numerous outstanding pieces for centuries. Among their masterpieces, we have featured the striking large jar in particular, “Four Kunshi (Four Noble Ones)” this time. The classical Oriental motif depicts a plant for each of the four seasons. It was proposed that the 15th master would add motif of four modern plants. “Eight Kunshi” was thus born with four new plants added to the traditional motif. Sensitivity and passion of the 15th master resulted in an unprecedented fusion of past and present. The large-scale porcelain “Eight Kunshi” depicts delicate and fleeting flowers in vivid blue. The eight plants coexist in peace, each transcending its own significance.
