Dear friends and followers: I was recently informed about an upcoming exhibition, titled Surreal Flatlands, set to take place at the Shanghai K11 Art Museum. To my surprise, at least one of my paintings is included in this exhibition. I was made aware of this through a dm I received from a collector, who also identifies as the “curator.” This dm was the first- and only-communication I have received regarding the exhibition, which is set to open tomorrow, February 28th, 2025. In addition to the lack of prior notice, I discovered that my name is being used in promotional materials for the event without my consent (as shown here). The exhibition appears to have proceeded without my knowledge or approval. I want to make it clear that the intention behind this post is not to attack anyone personally but to highlight an important issue regarding respect and transparency. If you plan to attend the exhibition, please be aware that at least one artist involved has been disrespected in this process, and I suspect others may be in similar situations. I also want to take this opportunity to encourage young artists to stand up for themselves and their rights. Regardless of the scale of the venue, the prominence of the institution, or whether or not the art is being sold, every artist deserves to have a say in how their work is used. You always have the right to say no. This situation is especially disheartening as my team has been in discussions with the museum since 2020 about the possibility of a professional exhibition together. I hope the museum will make the right decision and respect my wishes by removing my work from this particular show. Out of respect for all parties involved, this post will be promptly removed if the museum chooses to address the situation cooperatively. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
