Curated by Sayaka Takahashi of @pgi_gallery , a gallery in Tokyo representing the artist, this exhibition expands upon the presentation first shown at the 2024 edition of the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival. This exhibition is co-produced by @kyotographie and @sigmaglobalvision and is exhibited as part of the “Arles Associé” program of the Rencontres d’Arles. All the exhibitions have now been carefully uninstalled and packed away, and the performances and events have passed. KURANAKA’s special selection included tracks sampling “Okinawan Women” by Awich and KUNIKO from the opening reception, a song gifted by Yukino Inamine for the occasion, and works by Kazufumi Kodama, known for his “non-violent resistance through sound. To mark Okinawa Reversion Day (May 15), we share this powerful performance inspired by Mao Ishikawa’s “Red Flower” exhibition that was held as part of the Main Program of KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025. Featuring two works, “Okinawan Women (Still She Lives)” – a poem Awich adapted in dedication to Mao Ishikawa, and “Inagunchaa Kuduchi” – a piece inspired by Ishikawa’s “Red Flower” photographs in which Awich experiments with singing in Okinawan, Japanese, and English, blending traditional Okinawan folk elements. Guided by photographer Mako Mizobuchi, they got to try out sun printing—one of the oldest photographic techniques. Using sunlight, shadows, and everyday objects, the kids created beautiful blue prints on washi paper. It was a fun way to mix art and science and spark their creativity.
