So happy to see the book featuring my work published by @librimondadori in Italy. Written by the renowned novelist and Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata, the story revolves around a lesbian Nihonga painter. It’s beautifully narrated through alternating perspectives, exploring the present and past views of the characters and how they contrast with one another. I deeply appreciate Mondadori for recognizing contemporary Nihonga paintings and for selecting my work. If you’re an Italian speaker, I hope you’ll take a look 👀 イタリアのモンダドリ社から出版された川端康成の本『美しさと哀しみと』の表紙に作品を採用していただきました。物語は、レズビアンの日本画家の、現在と過去、それぞれの視点を交えながら、登場人物たちの異なる見方が対比される形で語られています。この小説は様々な国の言葉に翻訳もされ、日本では映画にもなったようです。恥ずかしながら読んだことがなかったので、古本屋で購入して今読んでいる真っ最中です。海外で日本をテーマにしたものを扱う時、どうしてもステレオタイプの日本のイメージがあり、浮世絵などがビジュアルとして選ばれがちだと思います。今回、現代の日本画作品に着目していただいたこと、私の作品を選んでいただきたこと、大変嬉しく思います。これを励みにますます制作に励んで参る所存です。 #book #kawabata #kawabatayasunari #mondadori #novel #japaneseliterature #nihonga #japaneseaesthetic #japaneseart #coverwork #bellezzaetristezza #arte

日本語訳は下にあります。 -Nihonga as Slow Art- This concept was mentioned by @iamfujimura when we were chatting at @narsfoundation in New York. ニューヨークでアーティスト・レジデンスに参加していたとき、他の美術形式と比較したことがなかったので、日本画が「スローアート」の概念を具現化していることに気づきました。チューブからそのまま使える絵具とは異なり、日本画には顔料と膠の個別の混合物が必要で、絵を描き始めるたびに指でかき混ぜます。日本画に使用される膠はタンパク質を含んでいるため、作った絵具は3日以上持たないため、その時必要な分だけの胡粉を作ります。特に、胡粉と呼ばれる白色の顔料については複雑な準備過程が必要です。また、胡粉を塗るためには高度な技術が求められます。胡粉を使いこなすことができると、高度な日本画家として認められると言われています。この動画は3分に短縮されていますが、全工程は約20分かかりました。動画では、胡粉を器に力強く叩きつけている様子をご覧いただけます。この技法は「百たたき」と呼ばれ、「百」は「100回」、「たたき」は「叩く」を意味します。このことから、胡粉を何度も叩く必要があることが示唆されています。この過程を経ることで、膠が均一に行き渡ると言われています。日本画の画家たちは、一つひとつの絵具を自らの手で作り、座って絵を描きます。日本画で使われる顔料には、胡粉のような貝殻、土、鉱物、植物、昆虫、金属など、さまざまな素材が含まれています。これらの素材の違いを指で直接感じることができるのです。そのため、私が個々の絵具を作るときには、常に自然とのつながりを感じます。このような理由から、私はこれらの複雑な素材を使い続けることにこだわっています。 #nihonga #japanesepainting #japaneseculture #日本画 #artistinresidence #japaneseaesthetic #slowart #gofun #pigment #胡粉

I’m giving a lecture online for a Chinese audience on Saturday. The lecture is supported by a prestigious university, the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Some famous Japanese painters have given lectures so far. I wonder if I am qualified to do this. Leaving my comfortable studio and experiencing life in NY was a great opportunity to think about Japanese culture, Nihonga painting, and who I am. I would like to continue to think about my work while traveling back and forth between New York and Japan. Next March, I will have 4 new paintings on exhibit in NY. Somehow, I don’t know why, I love NY and already miss the chaos.
